Findlay head coach Ron Niekamp wasn't that surprised his basketball team would start the season as the top ranked team in NCAA Division II.
After all, the Oilers had all five starters back and five seniors on the roster from a team that finished 28-5 and reached the Sweet 16 one year earlier.
But Niekamp was concerned with how his team would handle life as the team with the biggest target on its back.
"I was thrilled, but I knew what would come with it and the burden we would have to carry," Niekamp said. "I wasn't sure if we could stay No.1. We weren't overpowering. We lived by grit and guts all year."
In the end, the No. 1 ranked Oilers (36-0) were the best team, defeating unranked Cal Poly Pomona (25-8) 56-53 in overtime Saturday at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, MA.
Senior reserve guard Tyler Evans hit a fade-away 3-pointer as time expired to secure the victory.
Evans will be interviewed Live via phone by ESPN two's 1st Take program today at 10:45am.
Congrats to the University of Findlay Oilers!
