The Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has insisted there can be "no excuses" for failure from the club's new £12m signing Daniel Sturridge.
The 23-year-old is already with his third major club, having left Manchester City to join Chelsea but flourished at neither, and that has raised questions about everything from his quality to his temperament.
