Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and Head Coach Shanahan enjoy a lighter moment on the field before the team's Week Two game against the St. Louis Rams.
In a regularly scheduled meeting with the media Wednesday, as seen on Redskins.com, Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan was taken by surprise by one of the first questions of the press conference (about 1:17 into the video).
It was not the question that caught him off guard, but the person asking the question—his starting quarterback, Robert Griffin III.
A voice from the room crowded with media was heard asking, "What did you do for New Year's?"
There was an awkward moment of silence in the room and even some befuddlement could be sensed from Shanahan.
I, for one, was wondering as I watched the press conference why on Earth a reporter would ask such a question when so much is on the line as the Redskins prepare for their first playoff game since 2007.
You could sense from Coach Shanahan's face he was searching for the reporter in which to respond. He started to talk about planning for the upcoming Wild Card Game against the Seattle Seahawks and drawing up a game plan until he noticed, off camera, RGIII among the reporters.
"I wasn't sure how healthy you were," said a smiling Shanahan as he recognized Griffin. "So it was hard without you calling me."
The reporters were heard laughing in the room as Shanahan gathered himself and resumed the normal line of reporter's questions.
