Reuben Foster is one of the most sought after linebackers in the 2013 recruiting class. Initially an Alabama commitment, Foster chose to switch to in-state rival Auburn and get an Auburn tattoo on his forearm to show his allegiance.
He has since decommitted from the Tigers and is looking at a number of schools, including the Washington Huskies. Washington was considered a longshot, but the news of a pending visit raises its chances.
The Huskies will receive a visit from Foster soon, making their case that much stronger in the race for his signature. Foster told Kipp Adams of ESPN that "I hope to take my first trip to Washington Jan. 11."
Foster went on to say that “I like the atmosphere at Washington. When I see the sunshine, pretty trees, and people having fun on yachts; it reminds me of Florida.”
I am sure that it may look like pictures of Florida during the summer, but the winter is slightly different. That may be something that Foster witnesses when he travels to Washington this January.
The cold may not actually be a factor for Foster, but moving too far away from his family is something that matters. Foster has a young daughter and would like to be close to her while he goes through the college process over the next four years.
He told the Opelika-Auburn News (via AL.com) that "My daughter means the world to me” when asked about his passion for football. When asked about the coaching changes at Auburn, he said that "I want the best for me and my family, but it's confusing right now.”
With Georgia and Alabama still in the mix for Foster, staying close to family doesn’t have to mean that he stays with Auburn. There are other options that will help him reach that goal.
Georgia is expected to sign his great friend and safety prospect Tray Matthews. Georgia is also his original hometown team.
Alabama was his original school of choice, and has a proven track record for developing top linebacker talent.
Washington is a great school and the fact that they are receiving a visit shows a lot, but to expect Foster to be anything other than a long shot for the Huskies would be too much.
Where does Foster end up?
This guy is comfortable with Auburn, and according to Allie Davison with AuburnSports.com (via Twitter), his family is still high on the school:
Something I forgot yesterday for you early birds: Walked past Reuben Foster'a family all decked out in AU gear. Mom wore "AU Mom" shirt.— Allie Davison (@Allie_Davison) January 2, 2013
Foster’s family wearing AU swag may not mean a thing, but in the end it could mean something. It would be hard to see this talent leave the SEC with so many ties to schools around him, and his family being based in Auburn, Ala.
This will likely be a signing day decision, so fans of every school are in for a wait. If the Huskies are able to pull Foster, it would be the recruiting coup of the year.
