    UFC Heavyweight Championship: Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez

    Velasquez defeated Dos Santos by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-43, 50-44).

     

    Jim Miller vs. Joe Lauzon

    Miller defeated Lauzon by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

     

    Tim Boetsch vs. Costa Philippou

    Philippou defeated Boetsch by TKO at 2:11 of the third round.

     

    Yushin Okami vs. Alan Belcher

    Okami defeated Belcher by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

     

    Chris Leben vs. Derek Brunson

    Brunson defeated Leben by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

     

    Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland

    Wineland defeated Pickett by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27).

     

    Erik Perez vs. Byron Bloodworth

    Perez defeated Bloodworth by TKO at 3:50 of the first round.

    Moraga defeated Cariaso via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:11 of the third round.

    Round 1

    Velasquez presses forward. He shoots in, has his back, but Dos Santos reverses and gets back to his feet. Wow, what a start! Velasquez hits a jab. Dos Santos with a jab. Velasquez is going after the takedown hard, but coming up empty. Another failed takedown attempt. Velasquez is putting together punches. The jab is working well, but the takedowns are being stuffed. Velasquez presses Dos Santos against the fence. The pressure is an issue for Dos Santos. Velasquez with a big right and Dos Santos is hurt. Velasquez starting to pour it on. Dos Santos is down with Velasquez all over him.

    Round 2

    Velasquez is dominating Dos Santos. Easily. Too much pressure from the challenger. Dos Santos gets up after taking punishment, but Velasquez dumps him again. This is too easy. Dos Santos gets back up. Velasquez trips Dos Santos down. Dos Santos escapes, but Velasquez transitions to an armbar. Dos Santos on top, but Velasquez quickly gets up.

    Round 3

    Dos Santos' face is busted up. This may not last much longer. Velasquez is fresh. Velasquez with another easy takedown. Dos Santos back up, but Velasquez continues to be attached to him. Dos Santos has a couple nice shots while in the clinch, but there was not much behind them. Velasquez answers with a big combination. They briefly separate until Velasquez pressures him back to the fence. Velasquez teeing off on Dos Santos. Dos Santos has nothing on his punches.

    Round 4

    Velasquez is walking Dos Santos down. Dos Santos lands a left to the body. Velasquez with another takedown, but Dos Santos gets back up. Dos Santos goes for a takedown, but that is nowhere close. Velasquez with another takedown. Dos Santos back up. Velasquez with a nice body shot. Dos Santos lands a solid knee to the body. Dos Santos stuffs a takedown.

    Round 5

    Velasquez pressuring Dos Santos again. Dos Santos lands a right hand. Dos Santos defends another takedown. Velasquez trips Dos Santos to the canvas. Dos Santos gets back to his feet once again. 90 seconds remaining. Velasquez keeping up the pressure. He has given Dos Santos no space at all. Velasquez lands a head kick.

    Velasquez defeats Dos Santos by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-43, 50-44).

     

    One word: domination.

Jim Miller vs. Joe Lauzon

    Round 1

    The big lightweight tilt gets underway with Miller using his boxing early. Lauzon covering up and trying to counter. Good leg kick by Miller and he opens up with good combinations with Lauzon against the fence. Uppercuts by Miller finds a home. Another good leg kick from Miller. Big elbows from Miller. Standing arm triangle, but Lauzon gets out. Lauzon is busted wide open. The referee will have the doctor check the cut. The fight continues. Lauzon tries a takedown but it goes nowhere. Miller pouring it on. Lauzon with a good knee. Front kick lands. Straight left backs up Lauzon. Big action.

    Round 2

    Miller opens up again. Miller has Lauzon on the mat. The cut is still pouring blood. Miller mounts. Miller is slowly working in a D'arce choke, but lets it go and Lauzon is on top. A brief stop in the action as they cut loose tape off the glove of Lauzon, but the fight is not stood up. Quality refereeing. 30 seconds remain, but Lauzon has yet to do damage from top. Lauzon goes for a leg, but can't complete it.

    Round 3

    This is definitely the leader for fight of the night. Incredible action and the third round is underway. Miller nails Lauzon with a low leg kick. Another inside leg kick that puts Lauzon down. He backs away and lets Lauzon up. He is working him over on the feet. Lauzon lands a knee to the body. One minute remaining. These two are tired, but still putting on a show. Lauzon goes for a heel hook! Transitions to an ankle lock, but Miller is out. Lauzon goes for guillotine, and the horn sounds as the third round ends!

    Miller defeats Lauzon by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

     

    Miller rebounds from the UFC on FOX loss to Nate Diaz with an outstanding fight of the night performance against Joe Lauzon. He battered Lauzon on the feet in the first round. He unloaded a barrage of punches and elbows. Lauzon was up for the challenge though and survived. He came back with submission attempts in the second and third rounds that put Miller in danger. Miller is an elite lightweight and picks up a big win.

Tim Boetsch vs. Costa Philippou

    Round 1

    Boetsch pressure Philippou against the cage right away. He wants to take away the space. Boetsch gets the takedown against the fence. Philippou stands back up. Philippou is able to break away and get back to distance. Philippou lands a short overhand right. Boetsch comes forward but eats an uppercut in the process. Boetsch changes levels for the takedown, and this time its in the center of the Octagon. Kim Winslow stands them up. Philippou throws a solid combination at the tail end of the first.

    Round 2

    Boetsch seems to have an injury. Joe Rogan and Jon Anik seem to believe it is his hand. Boetsch gets Philippou against the fence. Boetsch is opened up by an accidental headbutt. Philippou defends the takedown. Boetsch gets poked in the eye as well. Rough round. Boetsch shoots in and Philippou sprawls. Boetsch pulls guard and Philippou begins to work from top. Philippou is starting to land big ground and pound.

    Round 3

    Boetsch shoots in and that is easily defended. He pulls guard and Philippou gets to work more big ground and pound. Boetsch does the same thing again. The blood is getting in his eyes and creating a big problem. Big ground and pound gets the stoppage.

     

    Philippou defeats Boetsch by TKO at 2:11 of the third round.

     

    Everything started well for Boetsch, but an accidental headbutt changed the course of the fight. After that blood got in to his eyes and created a vision problem for the remainder of the fight. To Philippou's credit he was not losing big and was in the fight prior to the headbutt. After that he was able to stop Boetsch's takedowns and deliver big ground and pound. A big win for another Serra-Longo middleweight.

Yushin Okami vs. Alan Belcher

    Round 1

    Belcher opens up with a variety of strikes. Okami is wise and blocks them all. Belcher tries a headkick and Okami tags him with a jab in the process. Okami has Belcher pressed on the cage. Okami tries to take Belcher down, but Belcher ends up on top. He goes for a guillotine, but it fails and Okami is in Belcher's guard now. Okami is passing to side control. Belcher gets to his knees, but Okami threatens with a choke as the round draws to a close.

    Round 2

    Okami pushes forward and clinches with Belcher against the fence. Okami tries to trip Blecher down and Belcher winds up on top. Belcher tries for a guillotine and pulls guard but does not have the submission. Okami on top again. Okami controlling from top position. He is too strong from top. Okami gets stood up from side control. More referee ineptitude. Belcher lands a right. Okami closes the distance and gets Belcher against the fence. Okami back on top on the ground. Belcher cannot get Okami off of him, but the referee will assist.

    Round 3

    Belcher rushes forward to start the third. A right drops Okami to a knee. Okami gets Belcher against the fence. Belcher falls in to full mount. Belcher has Okami's back. Okami gets up, but Belcher tries for a guillotine. Okami gets out easily and is on top with half the round remaining. Okami moves to mount. Okami is content to ground and pound, and Belcher gives up his back. Okami will ride out the decision.

    Okami defeats Belcher by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

     

    Okami proves he is still an elite middleweight in the division with a dominant three round decision. Belcher had no answer for Okami's grappling. Belcher was seeking to make a statement and lay claim to a title shot, but Okami sent him back to the end of the line. Not an exciting fight, but a good performance by Okami.

Chris Leben vs. Derek Brunson

    Round 1

    Leben catches a kick from Brunson, but cannot get the takedown. Brunson responds with a takedown of his own. Brunson passing to half-guard, but Leben regains full guard. Leben throws up an armbar attempt, and Brunson gets to half-guard again. Leben back to full guard. Leben tries to stand after Brunson gets out of a triangle attempt, but Brunson jumps back on him and mounts. Big elbow from Brunson. Brunson starting to land some ground and pound with under a minute remaining in the first round. Leben stands, but Brunson has his back.

    Round 2

    Brunson shoots in, but Leben stays on his feet. Leben comes forward and Brunson gets Leben back to the ground. Brunson tries to jump on a guillotine, but he does not have it. Several shots from Brunson lands on Leben. A left from Brunson lands. Both men seem tired. Brunson tries another takedown, but Leben stays upright.

    Round 3

    Leben tries to strike, but the length of Brunson is creating a few problems as he tries to get inside. Brunson goes for a takedown, but Leben stuffs it. A second attempt is successful and Brunson is working with almost four minutes remaining in the fight. Good knee to the body by Brunson. A left from Brunson lands. And another finds Leben. Leben with a solid leg kick. Brunson takes a shot, but it was slow and easily defended. Leben lands, but Brunson responds with a straight left. A left from Leben lands, and Brunson takes the fight to the mat. Brunson lets Leben up with 20 seconds to go. They swing sloppily at the finish.

    Brunson defeats Leben by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

     

    Brunson comes in on short notice and takes care of business in a very workmanlike manner. It was not the most exciting fight on the card, but he did not have the cardio to go 15 strong minutes. He went back to his roots and picked up the win. Leben was also having cardio issues, but he will be back. Both men will hope to have a better showing next time out.

Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland

    Round 1

    Both fighters testing their range early. Pickett lands a left. Wineland lands. Pickett lands a jab and Wineland counters. Pickett lands again. Wineland staggers Pickett with a big uppercut. Wineland lands a couple more punches. Pickett is very weary of the power now. Good body shot by Pickett, but Wineland catches him with a big shot that buckles him. Pickett shoots in, but it is defended. Pickett lands a good left. They swing till the finish of the first.

    Round 2

    Pickett lands another solid left to open the second. Wineland counters with a right that finds its mark. Halfway through the round and the action has slowed a bit. Pickett is not getting himself in to the dangerous exchanges of the first round. Jab from Wineland connects. Wineland is out of the way before Pickett can land the shots he is looking for. Final minute of the round. Wienland is cut near the eye, but it is flowing down and away.

    Round 3

    Another left from Pickett finds its home. Solid right from Pickett lands, but Wineland isn't phased. Pickett is landing more in the third but nothing fight stopping. Wineland works his jab. Under two minutes left in the fight. Wineland's movement is the difference in this fight. He is out of the way before Pickett can unload. Pickett pushes forward but it won't be enough.

    Wineland defeats Pickett by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27).

     

    Wineland's movement and power was the ultimate difference. Pickett landed a lead left hook multiple times, but Wineland was nowhere to be found for the follow-up shots. Wineland has looked like an elite bantamweight during his run in the UFC and back-to-back wins or Jorgensen and Pickett will elevate him in to the upper echelon of the division.

Erik Perez vs. Byron Bloodworth

    Round 1

    Bloodworth opens up with a big overhead right, but Perez blocks it. Perez backs Bloodworth to the fence. Perez lands a nice knee to the body. Good body shots from Perez in the clinch. Perez lands another knee to the body and Bloodworth drops. Perez dropping solid elbows from the guard. Bloodworth is covering up well from bottom, but Perez is keeping the pressure on. Repeated blows from Perez and he cuts open Bloodworth and it is all over.

     

    Perez defeats Bloodworth by TKO at 3:50 of the first round.

     

    Perez comes through with another great win. A fantastic knee to the body dropped Bloodworth and then it was an accumulation of ground and pound until referee Kim Winslow stepped in. Perez is really making a name for himself in the UFC.

Melvin Guillard vs. Jamie Varner

    Round 1

    Guillard opens with a solid leg kick. Another big kick from Guillard. Varner is being very methodical in trying to get in range. Guillard rushes forward, but nothing lands and Varner gets out of the way. Another big kick to the leg by Guillard. Nothing else is finding its mark. Varner throws a combination, but it is blocked. Varner shoots in but gets stuffed. Varner lands a right. Varner pours it on at the end of the round with heavy strikes. Varner's power shots stole the round.

    Round 2

    Varner puts Guillard on his back early in the second. Guillard explodes up and then flips Varner over. They get back to their feet. Big head kick by Guillard. Varner lands with a solid combination. Guillard lands a left. Guillard whiffs and Varner gets the takedown. Guillard gets back to his feet. Guillard continues to land leg kick after leg kick. Nice right from Varner. Guillard eats a kick to the groin and there will be a brief pause in the action. Guillard lands a good kick to the body.

    Round 3

    Varner gets Guillard down early in the third. Varner goes for a Peruvian necktie, but loses it and Guillard is on top. They get back to their feet. Varner gets back to top position and start to grind on Guillard. Back to distance they go after Guillard fights back to his feet. Another takedown from Varner. Guillard goes for an armbar but doesn't get it, but now he is in side control. Varner hits a switch as Guillard looked for a choke and gets right back on top with under a minute to go. Guillard pushes off and gets back to his feet with 30 seconds to go. Guillard with a big knee, but Varner drops him on his head and the fight ends.

    Varner defeats Guillard by split decision (30-27, 27-30, 30-27).

     

    Varner has looked impressive in his return to the UFC and picks up his second win. Guillard could not get anything going besides the leg kicks, and Varner's wrestling was the difference. Varner continues to show he is one of the better lightweights in the world and will most definitely earn a more significant fight in 2013.

Michael Johnson vs. Myles Jury

    Round 1

    Jury opens up by working his jab, and Johnson is already throwing heavy leather. Johnson is keeping Jury on the outside. The crowd quickly grows restless for no reason. Jury goes under Johnson's punches and puts him down. Jury passing Johnson's guard and starts reigning down blows. Johnson covering up well, but is having no answer for the amount of strikes. Jury doing work from top. Jury begins working for a Kimura, but he doesn't have a serious attempt at it. Jury gets to full mount and takes Johnson's back.

    Round 2

    Johnson continues his aggression, and he knows he lost that first frame. Nice head kick from Jury. Jury briefly looks for a takedown, but realizes it is not there and abandons the attempt. Jury gets a leg and puts Johnson down. Johnson is doing a better job defending, but he still has no offense.

    Round 3

    30 seconds in to the third and final round and Jury trips Johnson down. With his dominance from top so far that will likely seal the fight. He is controlling Johnson and giving him no room to do anything. This is a fantastic performance for the youngster.

    Jury defeats Johnson by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

     

    This was a great performance from Jury. Johnson entered on a good streak, and Jury takes all of the steam away from him. Jury improves on his undefeated record. It is hard to imagine how Joe Silva will book him in 2013, but it is clear he can compete with almost anyone on the roster right now.

Phil De Fries vs. Todd Duffee

    Round 1

    Leg kick from Duffee and he pounces on De Fries. He clinches. De Fries puts Duffee on his back and as Duffee fights back to his feet De Fries lands multiple strikes. Duffee reverses position and has De Fries' back against the fence. Good uppercut from Duffee and he follows up for the finish.

     

    Duffee defeats De Fries by TKO at 2:04 of the first round.

     

    Duffee was in a bit of trouble early as De Fries put him on his back, but he quickly fought back up and survived. When Duffee landed the uppercut the fight was over for De Fries. Duffee pounced all over De Fries with a litany of strikes until the fight was stopped. It was the kind of performance Duffee needed in his return to the UFC.

Leonard Garcia vs. Max Holloway

    Round 1

    The featherweights instantly come out looking to strike. Holloway establishing his distance early, and Garcia will need to find a way inside to brawl with the more technical striker. Nice kick to the body from Holloway. Holloway tags Garcia, but Garcia quickly is back to his feet. Holloway utilizing nice leg kicks. Garcia tries to clinch, but Holloway pushes away quickly. Garcia nearly connects with an overhand right at full power. It grazed Holloway and got his attention. Another spinning back kick from Holloway finds Garcia's midsection. Holloway lands a left to the body, and then a kick. Garcia connects and Holloway is backing away quickly. Holloway lands a spinning back kick again as the round closes.

    Round 2

    Holloway comes out to take control of the Octagon early. Good jab from Holloway. Holloway starting to throw more combinations, and he is finishing those with a leg kick. Garcia goes for a takedown and puts Holloway on his back. Holloway is back to his feet. Garcia is starting to get sloppy. Garcia lands a right, and is starting to turn up the pressure on Holloway. Another right finds the mark. Garcia is landing with more much accuracy as the second round goes on.

    Round 3

    Holloway looks tired in between rounds, but he did take this fight on short notice. Garcia continuing his pressure in the third. Holloway countering well. Garcia swings wildly, but its Holloway who lands in the exchanges. Garcia lands a couple strikes and it is turning in to his kind of fight. Holloway lands a right. Garcia goes for a takedown, and puts Holloway on the ground. That takedown could play big in the eyes of the judges with two minutes remaining. Holloway gets to his feet. Garcia is coming forward again. Holloway is the one landing in these exchanges. Holloway walks garcia to the fence, but they quickly separate. Holloway tries a kick, but Garcia catches it and takes him down as the round closes.

    Holloway defeats Garcia by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

     

    This was a very close fight, but Holloway got the better of the exchanges. Garcia came forward in his typical fashion and had a couple takedowns, but was not able to do much with them. The decision could have went either way, but the right man won and Garcia has lost four straight.

Chris Cariaso vs. John Moraga

    Round 1

    The first fight of the night is underway. Each fighter is tenatie early on. Good leg kick from Cariaso. Moraga starting to pressure Cariaso. Moraga gets a takedown, but Cariaso is back up to the feet quickly. A feeling out process early between the two. Moraga is keeping Cariaso at range, and this is not allowing Cariaso an opportunity to strike. Another solid leg strike from Cariaso. Moraga still pressing forward. Close round with little action.

    Round 2

    The second round starts much like the first. Cariaso tries to get inside of Moraga's reach and the fighters clinch. They are back at range. Cariaso lands another leg kick. Still not a lot of action from either man, but Cariaso is landing his leg kick repeatedly. Moraga gets a takedown. Cariaso threatens off his back and is back to his feet. Cariaso gets a takedown as the round closes.

    Round 3

    Cariaso coming forward. Moraga starting to open up a bit more in the third. Moraga trying to lock up a front choke. And it is over. Just like that.

     

    Moraga defeats Cariaso via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:11 of the third round

     

    The fight had less action than anticipated, but Moraga comes away with a solid submission win in the third. It was not the most thrilling bout to open a card, but it'll do the trick.
