With outstanding size and versatility, 4-star recruit Marcell Harris has a bright future ahead of him in college football.
Highly coveted by many of the country's big-name programs, Harris has already packed nearly 210 pounds onto his 6'1" frame. Harris will presumably put on even more muscle under a college training program, which will make him an even more viable candidate to fill in immediately as a starter, depending on where he winds up in 2013.
With excellent closing speed and instincts, the Dr. Phillips High School (Grovedale, Fla.) standout is an absolute force in run support. He can bring the punishment as much as anyone, as his game tape has plenty of "Wow!" plays in the form of bone-crushing hits.
But what makes Harris unique is his ability to drop back into pass coverage, and that should help him see the field at the collegiate field sooner rather than later.
For a player of his size, his sub-4.6 40-yard dash is impressive (h/t Rivals.com). But Harris even more impressively clocked in at 4.28 seconds in the shuttle drill, which showcases his agility and exceptional ability to change directions quickly.
That particular skill also helps Harris take exceptional pursuit angles, where he is able to square his shoulders to the ball-carrier and make consistent, technically sound tackles.
Harris is also able to make up ground and drive toward opposing receivers when the ball is in the air. It helps him to move in the right direction in a hurry, as he has uncanny route anticipation and a strong understanding of defense schematics. If he doesn't come down with the ball, this combination sets up opportunities for Harris to dislodge the ball emphatically from wide receivers.
A stellar senior season has resulted in 93 tackles, three interceptions and four forced fumbles (h/t 247Sports), and that has solidified Harris as one of the top safety prospects in the nation.
Due to his extremely physical style of play and immense physical gifts, Harris will make an impact on the field in at least some regard as a freshman.
