Jay Simpson said Friday that the decision to cut his season short after 10 games and apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt hardship waiver was a mutual agreement between coach Matt Painter and himself.

Talking to media members for the first time since the decision was made Dec. 15 to seek a redshirt season, the 6-foot-9 freshman power forward said the choice could be a blessing in disguise.
