Few people have such an instant impact on the Washington sports scene as Robert Griffin III. Many people not only in Washington but around the country got an RGIII jersey for the holidays.
ESPN reported that RGIII′s No. 10 jersey has set a single-season jersey sales record. And since the league’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31, he accomplished this feat with three months to spare.
RGIII has been the catalyst behind the resurgence of a Redskins team that has won six games in a row. At 9-6. a win over the Cowboys on Sunday night at home in Landover would bring the Redskins their first Eastern Division Championship title since 1999 and their first playoff spot since 2007.
That takes us back to Sunday when Chick Hernandez, Brian Mitchell, Charley Casserly and Trevor Matich were making their final predictions on Washington-Philadelphia game and began to bring Redskins Kickoff Live to a close. The show that airs on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic saved one last surprise for its viewers.
It was a clever feature on Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, set to the holiday standard "Oh Christmas Tree.” The clever takeoff called “Oh RGIII,” was meant as a fun way close the show and to pay tribute to Washington's best holiday gift: Robert Griffin III.
Suddenly this clever little tribute took on a life of its own and before the first quarter of the Redskins-Eagles game was over, “Oh RGIII” had gone viral and football fans nationally were tweeting to friends and family.
In talking Monday with CSN Mid-Atlantic Managing Editor Joe Yasharoff, the man who created “Oh RGIII" really had no idea that his 2:23 second feature would be such a hit.
Yasharoff on the feature: "RGIII has become such an amazing personality not only here in Washington but around the country that people can’t get enough of him. We have seen our ratings on both Redskins Kickoff Live and Redskins Postgame Live at all-time highs. So the feature that showcases him as a gift to the Washington community really hit home to so many of our viewers and I was so happy that they wanted to share it."
Here is your chance to see Oh RGIII. Happy Holiday's!!
