Lions' Record Diminishes Calvin Johnson's Feats: Football Wires
DETROIT -- Jon Gruden was right.
Deal with it, Detroit.
During yet another nationally televised collective Lions disgrace, the ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Saturday night suggested that Calvin Johnson's new standard for single season NFL receiving yards was built too much on "meaningless" yards. It wasn't an insult to Johnson personally or professionally - although it no doubt seeped through the easily exposed crevices of this city's notoriously thin skin.
But it was a stinging indictment of a team that couldn't win despite such singular brilliance and also a league whose increasingly restrictive defensive rules has made passing yardage much easier to gain today. It dilutes the significance of the accomplishment.
