Cousins has averaged 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Kings this season. He has a history of character issues, and this latest incident will add to that reputation.
The former Kentucky standout immediately showed upon arriving in the NBA in the 2010-11 season that he is an immensely talented low-post player, but also has a volatile personality.
He had problems getting along with head coach Paul Westphal at the start of his career in Sacramento, and the constant feuding eventually led to Westphal’s dismissal.
Keith Smart was then hired to lead the team, and Cousins has been largely cooperative during the new coach’s tenure. But this latest incident marks the end of his string of good behavior.
Sacramento lost the game 97-85 and is now 8-18 this year. The team has not reached the playoffs since the 2005-06 season and looks to be on track for another disappointing campaign.
Trade rumors will be buzzing around Cousins now, as any team with a coach who can keep him under control will be adding a player with exciting potential.
