If Southampton are to stay in the Premier League, they cannot afford to lose this kind of match. Nigel Adkins' side had the perfect opportunity to put breathing space between themselves and the bottom three for the first time this season following Wigan's defeat to Arsenal earlier in the day but they blew it, instead allowing Sunderland to snatch a crucial victory that moved them four points clear of the relegation zone and should do wonders for their confidence ahead of a daunting run of fixtures.
