The UEFA Champions League draw for the last 16 has just taken place, and Arsenal FC have been drawn against the tough German side Bayern Munich, with the first tie to be held at The Emirates on Feb. 19, 2013.
Last year's Champions League runners-up Bayern Munich are currently on top form as they sit nine points clear at the summit of the German Bundesliga. In six European group games, they lost only once and overcame Valencia to top Group F.
Bayern are joint top goalscorers in the competition with 15 goals from a total of eight different players.
Those scorers include Thomas Muller, Claudio Pizarro, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Xherdan Shaqiri, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez and Toni Kroos.
Bayern have top players all over the pitch. With the likes of Mauel Neuer, Phillip Lahm, Jerome Boateng and Holger Badstuber in the goalkeeper and defensive positions, Bayern have a strong team straight through the spine.
In comparison, Arsenal have finished second in their group, amassing only 10 points from a possible 18 and scored only 10 times while conceding eight.
Before the draw, Wenger stated he did not want to draw FC Barcelona, but he must have also of wished to avoid Bayern and Dortmund.
All is not doom and gloom for Arsenal as they showed with the right players and tactics that they can still turn up the style with that 5-2 win over Reading last Monday.
Wenger finally dropped Gervinho and Ramsey and played Theo Walcott through the middle and Oxlade-Chamberlain down the right.
The team were quicker on the attack and economic on the counter attack. It was great to see movement and speed being injected back into the squad.
Wenger must see that hat-trick scorer Santi Cazorla, midfield stalwart Jack Wilshere and top goalscorer Walcott are the key elements needed at Arsenal for the rest of this season. There is no need to take gambles on off-form players.
Hopefully, Podolski will have something to prove going against his old club and Per Mertesacker should be keen to show.
If Wenger can get the personnel and tactics right over the two legs with Bayern Munich then his team have a chance of upsetting the Germans and progressing through to the next round.
