Being voted in as the cover athlete for Sony's MLB 13 the Show just got tougher. Los Angeles Dodgers' superstar Matt Kemp was announced as one of the newest candidates for the cover vote. Milwaukee Brewers' slugger Ryan Braun is also in the running.
They join the Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper, New York Yankees' C.C. Sabathia and Pittsburgh Pirates' Andrew McCutchen. Kemp brings a combination of production and star power that the other candidates don't, but determining the winner goes beyond that logic.
Braun has already captured an MVP award, so he has some of the same qualities working in his favor. In fact, he beat out Kemp for the award in 2011.
It could come down to which city and/or fan base can create a bigger push to back their guy.
The Pirates' local media has already started to push McCutchen. Joe Kapp of 93.7 The Fan released this tweet after McCutchen's name was announced as a candidate.
If Dodger fans get behind Kemp in the same manner, it'll be tough to beat the Bison.
He's coming off a season that saw him miss 56 games, but still hit .303 with 29 home runs and 69 RBI. He was selected to appear in his second straight All-Star game as well.
When he's healthy, Kemp could very well be the game's best player. I may get some arguments from Mike Trout and Los Angeles Angels fans, but Kemp has played on an elite level for longer.
Braun is one of the game's best pure power-hitters. He followed up his MVP season with a 41 home run, 112 RBI campaign in 2012. No one could argue with either of the two most recent candidates announced.
It appears there is one more candidate left to be revealed, per MLB.com. We'll have to wait and see who fills that spot. The voting begins on January 7, and the game is scheduled for release on March 5 2013.
