IconIn the summer, sleeper picks are as common as rookie holdouts and Charlie Weis fat-surgery jokes.

Come January, though, there's no story more banal than that of a sleeper team missing the playoffs.

On that note, I present to you the 2007 San Francisco 49ers.

With pricey free agent signees to complement young stars Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis, San Fran would seem to have all the makings of a new dynasty.

But history has shown that preseason buzz is often far removed from regular season reality, and few Niner watchers are focused on the issues that will really matter in 2007. To wit:

Can Smith step up when teams commit to stopping Gore?

Who will rush the passer?

Is anyone who spent significant time in Buffalo worth 80 million dollars?

Does sweeping Seattle mean what it used to?

When was having Ashley Lelie as a starting receiver ever a good thing?

These are the questions that will make or break the 49ers come September—and the answers, unfortunately, aren't pretty.

Can Smith step up?

Not as well as he'll need to.

Though Smith certainly has the tools to be a solid NFL quarterback, his development has been uneven. Awful did not begin to describe his first season, but the youngster was capable enough last year to remind people why he went number one overall in the 2005 Draft.

The bad news is that O-coordinator Norv Turner has left the Bay Area for San Diego, meaning Smith will struggle to keep improving in 2007. With opponents so focused on stopping Gore, Smith needs to be better than he was in 2006. Without Turner, it's not clear that he can be.

Who will rush the passer?

Maybe Tully Banta-Cain and Brandon Moore.

Or then again maybe not.

Moore led the team in sacks last year from his outside linebacker position, and Banta-Cain was signed in the offseason to help bolster the pass rush. San Francisco's 3-4 defense encourages blitzing and edge rushes, but the team's personnel is lacking.

Someone will need to step up.

Who that someone will be is anyone's guess.

Is anyone who spent significant time in Buffalo worth 80 million dollars?

Only Jim Kelly circa 1990.

The Niners spent their 80 mil on CB Nate Clements, one of the best defensive players available in the offseason.

Having a shutdown corner is a sweet luxury—just ask the Denver Broncos.  However, paying too much for any one player can seriously cripple a franchise in the long run—just ask the Washington Redskins.

Clements will make the secondary better by leaps and bounds. To live up to his billing, though, he'll need to do everything short of channeling Ronnie Lott.

You can't put a price tag on a shutdown corner—but if you could, it would be far less than 80 million bucks.

Does sweeping Seattle mean anything?

Not unless getting swept by Arizona does too.

When was having Lelie as a starter ever a good thing?

It certainly wasn't in Denver or Atlanta.

It certainly won't be in San Francisco.

The Niners did their best to get much-needed help at receiver this offseason. In addition to Lelie, Darrell Jackson was added via trade from Seattle, and Arnaz Battle remains from last year.

Despite the moves, though, San Fran's receiving corps is still filled with coulda-shoulda-wouldas.

Lelie could have been a world-class deep threat. Jackson should have been able to stay injury-free for a full season by now. And Battle would have been better off staying a quarterback.

The one potential bright spot in the receiving corps may be rookie Jason Hill.

The most important question of all, of course, concerns where San Francisco will finish. There's no doubt that these Niners are as talented as any SF squad in recent memory. Head coach Mike Nolan will have them playing hard every week, and Gore will continue to pile on the yardage.

But living up to lofty expectations is easier said than done.

The growth of Smith, the fate of the pass rush, the performance of the wideouts, and the Jekyll-and-Hyde play of their divisional opponents will go a long way towards determining whether the 2007 49ers make good on their promise.

With so many things that need to go right, unfortunately, it looks like everyone's '07 sleeper will have a special surprise in store for their supporters:

A last place showing in the NFC West.

Projected finish: 4-12, 4th NFC West

Keep your eyes on: NT Aubrayo Franklin—The big body will make a big difference on the D-line.

Take your eyes off: WR Ashley Lelie—For the reasons above and so many more.

  1. Interesting take on what seems to be the preseason darling among most NFL writers. The 49ers definitely have the potential to make the playoffs but could be a doormat yet again if Alex Smith doesn't play well and teams clamp down on Frank Gore. Darrell Jackson is a decent No. 2 receiver and if Vernon Davis plays well they could fulfill there high expectations. One player you forgot to mention is the 9ers first round pick Patrick Willis who could start at linebacker as a rookie. I see them as an 8-8 team at best and 6-10 at worst.

  2. who spells their name kevan?

  3. You gotta be joking, Lee. So many team previews were rock solid, then you throw out this stinker. 4-12? Gimme a break!

This is an 8-8 team at worst. If they could win 7 games last year as bad as that defense was, there's no way the Niners don't improve with Clements, Banta-Cain, Franklin, Willis, Lewis, and company now upping the intensity on D.

Plus, as mediocre as the receiving corps are (and I agree, they are pretty pathetic), they're still better than last year's bunch. When you factor in a healthy Vernon Davis and a deeper O-line, and you have the makings of offensive improvement across the board.

This is hands down, a vastly improved team over last year's version. There just ain't no way that they don't at least match last year's record.

I'll agree, they hyped teams are usually duds (like the Cardinals last year), but this is a team that has actually been drafting well and following a pattern of improvement. Niners are on the rise, baby.

  4. It is shocking that you predict the 49ers to win 3 less games this year than last despite all the additions made in the off-season.

Some responses to your points that show why you are wrong:

Q--Can Smith step up when teams commit to stopping Gore?

A--He did so last year with some success and Gore still ran wild. This year, Smith has more weapons and more offensive line depth.

Also, Smith s development has been anything but uneven it has been a steady improvement over the past two seasons. The loss of Norv is significant, but the system remains in place.

    Q--Who will rush the passer?

A--Admittedly, the pass rush could use more depth . . but what team doesn t want more pass rushers? The group is deeper and more solid than last year, which is why improvement is to be expected.

Q--Is anyone who spent significant time in Buffalo worth 80 million dollars?

A--Don t believe the hype. Clements contract is cap-friendly It s not really an $80 million deal. He could be cut after 3 years with minimal cap impact; check the numbers. Thank you, Mr. McCloughan.

Q--Does sweeping Seattle mean what it used to?

A--Not really. But this team is built to beat Arizona and St. Louis, not Seattle. See, e.g., big, physical secondary. Beating Seattle is just gravy.

Q--When was having Ashley Lelie as a starting receiver ever a good thing?

A--So far, it hasn t been. Forget Lelie. Think Arnaz least drops in the NFL per catch Battle, D-Jax (who, despite missing three games and QB Hasselback for several games, had a great 06), Jason Hill and Vernon Davis.

I happen to think that the 49ers will make the playoffs this year. That said, I admit that result will require several pieces to fall into place. What I cannot see, however, is a worse record than last year, and certainly not 4-12.

  5. You must be a cowboys fan because this write up is totally absurd. I understand the niners are banking on a lot of things to happen. But there is no way the niners digress and finish with a 4-12 record. Even being the niners fanatic I am, I can understand someone saying we wont make the playoffs. But finishing with only 4 wins?? It just is not going to happen. Mike Nolan is too good of a coach, frank gore is too talented and alex smith it too smart.

My prediction-- Niners sneak into playoffs this year, with a weak nfc west... Vernon Davis and Frank Gore Pro Bowl players.

  6. I think Kevan Lee is aa pen name for Terrell Owens!

    NICE TRY!!!

  7. If it was your intention to make your self look really bad. Well, you did quite well. All of your statements regarding the 49ers are extremely negative and your stance is not balance but is more bias towards the 49ers. This team now has a load of new talent and continued development and improvement from its young players. Teams that draft well and are players in free angencys do not regress!! Teams that don't draft well and spend too much (redskins) don't play well.

  8. ...in hopes of making it in the sports writing industry. Listen clown, if you want to be respected as a writer with any credibility then you'll have to stop pulling junk out of your rear end. Did lelie make a personal attack on your or what? You kept mentioning him like he was brought in to carry the team when he hasnt even won a starting job yet. You make it sound like Norv was out on the field making the plays last year...with him gone do you think alex is going to forget the playbook, lose some arm strength or perhaps join an undergound dog fighting club? As for our pass rush - first of all we didnt even run the pure 3-4 system that we wanted to because of the lack of 2 things, a true NT and a lack of depth at LB. We addressed the NT position and we're now deeper at LB than you have taken your writing career after this piece of trash you just posted. As for clements contract and your assumption that he's overpaid....listen guy, before you start trying to cramp that little brain of yours with trying to figure out numbers, you should first concentrate on your writing skills and overall football knowledge

  9. "When was having Ashley Lelie as a starting receiver ever a good thing?"

Who said Lelie was going to be the starter? have you completely forgotten about Darrel Jackson? Jackson when healthy is a top 10 receciever, don't believe me? Look no farther than his stat sheet for this past season, he missed 3 games and still put up great numbers(he still managed 60+ Receptions, 900 yards and 10 TD's!)

Battle would've been better off staying at QB? Please! Are you a fucking moron? Battle has been our most reliable receiver always showing up when we need him. and just because Norv left for San Diego all of a sudden means Smith is going to bust? That is absolute bullshit, we are going to continue to run Norv's system so Smith should be fine. This is obviously a case a fucktard who knows nothing about the game of football and is allowed to write football articles to the general public. Please go fuck yourself, you are a waste of flesh and sperm.

  10. I mean, you don't really believe that crap, do you? Last year, the Niners were a few points (in two games)away from making the playoffs, Alex showed steady improvement, the Niners had a great off-season, and yet they are going to decline from 7-9 to 4-12? Is this the appropriate place for trolling?

  11. I'm just going to throw a few things out there for you.

    - The 49ers only lost one starter in problematic receiver Antonio Bryant who has been replaced by more dependable receivers. So this team is basically the same team you saw beat the Denver Broncos out of the playoffs except with Darrel Jackson, Ashley Lelie, Tully Banta-Cain, Michael Lewis, Patrick Willis, and Joe Staley.

-The O-line is coming back completely intact after a terrific 06 season with more depth to it. Championships start with the O-line if you ask me.

-Vernon Davis is healthy and and more comfortable in the system. Appears ready for a breakout season.

-Manny Lawson the 49ers 2nd 1st round draft pick in 06 had a good season for the 49ers last year for a rookie. He's put on about ten punds of muscle so far and is also far more comfortable in the system. Is beginning to take on a leadership role.

    - Patrick Willis, the guy is a tackling machine.

    - Frank Gore routinely faced 8 and 9 guys in the box LAST SEASON and they still couldn't stop him. They're not going to do it again this season with the weapons we've got on the outside.

    - If you haven't noticed, the salary cap took a big jump when the new collective bargaining agreement was signed. Teams had a lot more money to spend and Nate Clements, Adalius Thomas, Dwight Freeney, all the Guards are products of the expanded market. You really don't pay that much attention to football do you?

    - The 49ers still have cap space after all their signings because they entered free agency with the most cap room. 40 mil.

    - If our corners did such a good job against Seattle and St. Louis last season, why would they take a step back with much better talent this year. They're likely to expand on that by shutting the Arizona WR's down as well. We've got TWO PRO BOWL CORNERS.

    - Michae Lewis hasn't been the best in coverage, but because Nate Clements is fully capable and even liks to play 1on1, Lewis will be allowed to play in the box a lot of the time like a 5th linebacker. That is what he was allowed to do during his 2004 pro bowl season.

    - Tully Banta-Cain showed remarkable talent when given a starting role for the Patriots last season. Had 5.5 sacks whiel only starting the last few games after Seau got injured. Excelled in the playoffs with another 3 sacks.

-MLB Brandon Moore... learn about this guy.

To say the 49ers are going to go 4-12 leads me to believe that you either don't know what the hell you are talking about and don't know football at all or it leads me to believe that you're simply a fan of a rival team like the Cowboys, Raiders, Seahawks, Cardinals, or Rams and are trying to get the Niner fans all riled up.

PS. Don't you dare compare us to the Redskins. Our team builds through the draft as evidenced by our 4 1st rd draft picks in the last two years and most overall draft picks this year. Along with having arguably the best rated draft. The Redskins always trade away all their draft picks giving up any hope of developing team chemistry.

KEVAN LEE, please don't be a coward and ignore this. I would like to see what you have to say to all this and where you get your absurd speculations.

  12. I hope you personally apologize for this ridiculous analysis when the season comes to an end. I will personally save this article and this website to show you how wrong you are and that you have no business writing. YOUR A GENUINE KNUCKLEHEAD even that at best. This is absurd especially the 4-12 comment. What planet are you one. You re going to feel pretty damn stupid later on. Mark my words!!!!!

  13. "Moore led the team in sacks last year from his outside linebacker position"

Moore played inside, Do a little research you won t sound so stupid!!

  14. with joe

  15. Did u even watch any of the 9ers games last year? In both of out contests with the Cards we had a TD called back for a penalty. With that in mind you will come to realize the the Cards did not completely dominate or blow us out, whereas against the Hawks we did. Next, get your facts straight. If you had done any kind of research you will come to find that Clements was signed to a 7-year $64 million contract. And by the way the 9ers front office made sure taht if god forbid they had to cut him that he won't impact our salary cap all that much. And don't worry about our pass rush, there's a reason why we drafted Lawson that high. Here we go again with Lelie...his situations in Atlanta and Denver were not at all his decision. In Denver they got another No. 1 receiver to throw the ball to...thus lessening Lelie's chances of seeing balls thrown his way...and how can you fire on anyone who has Vick throwing to them? You really need to do you r research if you say that Djax and Battle are busts, i don't even need to clarify why! Again if you watched any of the 9er games last year you would have seen that after Week 5 teams were stacking the box and Gore was still able to pile up yards regardless. Your lucky i have to watch the movie Chuck and Larry right now, or i would have had some words for your A*$!

  16. Obviously a Niner hater.

He calls Alex a star along with the Vernon and Frank and then goes on to call him mediocre.

Expectations are high in Ninerland and they very well may not live up to them but to predict only 4 wins this year with WAY more talent is CLEARLY the sign of a hater who is terrified at the thought of the Niners dominating the NFL again.

I love how he critisizes Battle when Battle is considered a #3 reciever and had the best hands in the NFl in 2006.Why go after Battle he has been consistent humble and a great team player. No one pumps him to be a STAR so why target him?

So called "writer" like this make me always wonder how much credibility does one need to have his article posted.Obviously none.

  17. I feel like I am reading an article in 2005.

Come on, So much positive growth and talent cannot equate to 4-12 record. Alex Smith will not disappoint, everyone in NFL will be shocked at his age, intelligence, and game control. He is still the YOUNGEST starting QB as a 3rd year player!!

Kevan, I don't see writing football as a career for you. Stick with gardening or something

  18. Nickname: Kevan
    Hometown: Boise, ID
    Website: Kevan Lee!
    Top Teams: Patriots, Boise State

  19. Kevan is a bandwagoneer

  20. Hey just because the guy goes against conventional wisdom of NFL "experts" doesn't mean his article or writing is worthless. So much of the NFL is based on luck, injuries, and other factors that no team is bullet proof. Don't call the guy worthless just because he made a bold prediction. Every year we crown these teams before the games are played and are stunned when one team comes out of nowhere to contend and another hyped team goes into the shitter. One point he should have mentioned is how much the NFC West has improved with Seattle getting key players back from injury and AZ and St. Louis having another year to develop their younger players.

  21. I call him worhtless because of a STUPId prediction.Yes the Niners may not live up to expectations but to say they will completly flop and only win 4 games is an outright uneducated prediction with alterior motives, obviously he hates the Niners.

  22. Predicting the Niners will go 4-12 is absolutely ludicrous. Winning in the NFL is all about the talent and the Niners won 7 games with admittedly mediocre talent. With all the free agents, draft picks plus another year of experience for guys like Smith, Gore, Davis, Lawson, etc, this team is poised for a big move upward, not down. Nice analysis (Sarcasm intended).

  23. Sure the loss of Norv Turner was not good, but Smith still has his veteran mentor in Trent Dilfer. And i'm sorry but was Norv the one sitting with Alex on the sideline? No, he was in a booth calling plays. Smith will prove to everyone why he was selected #1.

  24. Worst post ever. It's all negative and clearly this guy is a biased motherfucker.

People just don't want to see this team be good again. Fans all together remember the 49ers dominate of the 80's and 90's and this is looking for a comeback.

Are you shitting me? They were 7-9 last season and somehow "UPGRADES" will make them worse? Your shitting me right? Your a terrible writer. You'd prolly say New England will automatically win the Super Bowl and that the Cardinals will surprise everyone. You suck at life.

Upgrades in the secondary with Clements and Lewis helps...it doesn't hurt. Rtard. Clements is great then Swantae Spencer....Michael Lewis is better then Keith Lewis. Thus out secondary is better.

Our linebacking corps is gonna be one of the fastest and youngest in the league. Manny Lawson, Brandon Moore, Patrick Willis, and Tully Banta Cain are a better unit then last years.

The Defensive line is questionable. But w/e. We have youth with Florida's National Championship dlinemen in Joe Cohen and Ray McDonald. Talent will show up.

On offense were better. We will replace Kwame Haris with Joe Staley. VD will be better because he won't be injuryed. Darrell Jackson, Ashley Lelie, Arnaz Battle (best hands in the NFL), and Jason Hill are an upgrade over Battle and Bryant of last year.

And of course, Frank Gore will rape everyons soul. Common. Your a crappy writer to believe they'll do worse. Go die.

  25. Can Smith step up when teams commit to stopping Gore?
I think so, he showed some great flahes last year. With a healthy Vernon Davis and the addition of Darrell Jackson to help him out. I don't see why not.

    Who will rush the passer?
Hmmm... Moore, Manny Lawson, TBC, Lewis and company.

Is anyone who spent significant time in Buffalo worth 80 million dollars?
Sure, a top 5 CB in the NFL. This is 2007 not 1990.

Does sweeping Seattle mean what it used to?
Sure it means you gain confidence and know you can take out the top team.

When was having Ashley Lelie as a starting receiver ever a good thing?
When did the 49ers release their 2007 depth chart?

Final... You are a hater, Raiders fan maybe?

  26. It appears my blood will run red in the streets tonight.

Here's the deal. Preseason favorites in the NFL routinely fall on their face in the regular season. Look at the Cardinals from last year. My story focused on the questionable parts of the team because so much has been made about what they have done right. I agree that they are building a solid foundation through the draft, making moves to fill important positions through free agency, and maintaining a top-notch coaching staff. However, all of that doesn't necessarily translate into immediate success.

I am not sold on Alex Smith as a strong NFL quarterback just yet. I felt he was overrated coming out of college, and although he played better last year than his rookie year, he still was nothing spectacular. Since defenses were indeed starting to load the line of scrimmage against Gore, you would have hoped Smith could have finished with more touchdowns than interceptions and a passer rating above the league average.

Darrell Jackson has the most potential to be a solid receiver. He has played very well at times, and can be fun to watch when he's on top of his game. But he's not getting younger and as of mid-June was still feeling pain in his toe.

I have the Niners winning four games because I can't see them playing as well with a target on their backs and extra pressure all around them. Their schedule starts out extremely tough (St. Louis, Pitt, Seattle, Baltimore in a row), and if they lose those games, detractors are going to start piling on.

You all make excellent points. I think the linebackers are going to be exciting to watch. Building through the offensive line is the most important thing this team can do. The team is making improvements across the board.

But keep in mind, that just because a team is moving in the right direction does not always mean that they will win more games than last year. The NFL is not nearly so cut and dry. I think they'll take their lumps this year and come back even stronger in 2008.

  27. I posted a response over at http://www.ninersnation.com that I think addresses my own issues with your story. I'm not a pie in the sky fan that thinks the team will win the division and everything will be great, but I think your pessimistic view is a little off base. The team could conceivably play better and finish with a worse record, but as I said in my post, I don't think they finish any worse than 6-10 barring some crazy injury scenarios.

  28. Nice try bonehead, please do more research before writing silly articles. You obviously don't know anything about football or probably have never played the game.

  29. I really should not even acknowledge your existance, after your writing because it means nothing to me. It has no backbone to its context,it makes me wonder how you can write for this sight, being so biased with no true facts. You better keep your day job

  30. I was going to respond to all your arguments but by reading all the responses there is no need to it..
I will just inform you on why we are being pick this season to go to the playoffs..
The niner hype isn t because of last year record or this offseason. Those are just parts of the equation, the hype comes since McNolan took charge of this franchise and show they had a long term plan, a plan in which they were going to restructure the whole foundation of the team, a plan that will get reed of bad character guys or guys that didn t fit the structure even though they were stars on the team, a plan that was focus on getting impact players from the draft, sacrificing wins in the early stages of the project, a plan that took the franchise out of salary cap hell, a plan that set up this offseason as a team that barely didn t make the playoffs last season and as the team with the most money to spent this offseason, a plan that has fans so excited that has made one of them taken the time out of his work to write you this response even dough English is his second language.
You see they have setup this season since they took over three years ago, this is not a lucky team that just happens to look good on paper or a team that is cool for picking them to the playoffs, this is a team that has been put in this position to win big this season not by chance or luck instead because of a long hard thought approach on how make winners out of young good character men, orchestrated by great leadership in Mike Nolan, an excellent personnel guy in Scott Mc and a good owner in not getting in their way in Dr York.
So making the statement that this team is like other teams in years past were they were pick to make the playoffs just because they look good at the end of last year or because of the offseason is missing the whole story and is being ignorant of what has been happening in the bay area in the last few years.

  31. Hey you're totally right, it's true that if there is ANY POSITIVE buzz about any team before the season begins, it sets forth a chain reaction into the universe where the exact OPPOSITE will always occurs based on the rules of negative polarity sleeperifics.

C'mon, get hour head out of your *bleep*, just because people are expecting the 49ers to well because of the additions they've made, the improvement of the last 2 drafts, and the momentum that's gaining from the end of last year does not mean that OMG SINCE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT THEM NOW, THAT AUTOMATICALLY MEANS THEY'RE GOING TO BE AWFUL!! That's like saying it usually always rains when I eat a burrito, so burrito and rain must be linked somehow.

And fyi, Darrell Jackson is a true #1 WR, something the niners didn't have last year. Last year he scored 10 tds in only 13 games and was near the top in the NFL in receiving yards per game. So don't tell me he's a woulda-shoulda-coulda.

  32. Kevan, did you change your last name from Barlow to Lee? Let go of your hate; it will lead to a longer and healthier life.

  33. You've got to be kidding me.

  34. "I am not sold on Alex Smith as a strong NFL quarterback just yet. I felt he was overrated coming out of college, and although he played better last year than his rookie year, he still was nothing spectacular. Since defenses were indeed starting to load the line of scrimmage against Gore, you would have hoped Smith could have finished with more touchdowns than interceptions and a passer rating above the league average."

Smith made marginal improvements. Smith will only flourish as he gains more experience in our offense. lets take a look at the stats. In Smith's second year (first year in norv's system) he throws for 2800 yards and 16 TD's and 16 INT's. Now lets look at the talent around him. Our oline was inconsistent in the passing game but was awesome in the running Game, Justin Smiley, Eric Hietman, Adam Snyder, and Tony Wragge all were standouts on the line. Frank Gore turned out to be a premier back rushing for 1600 yards(5.4 YPC). A core of misfits for receivers gilmore, Bryant, Taylor, and Williams. Our rookie tight end was infective due to injuries which left Eric Johnson at the helm who is a formidable target. Alex in my opinion over-achieved in his second year with such a poor library of weapons. Now lets look at his third year (second year in norvs system) Lets take away Bryant and Johnson and lets add Ashley Lelie who was TAILOR MADE FOR THIS OFFENSE, as his long speed and deep threat ability make him a perfect mold of a air coryell receiver. Now lets add Darrell Jackson who is proven receiver and ranks among the top of the league when he is healthy, Jackson gives us a no.1 that hasnt been present since TO. Again lets add rookies Jason Hill who has the potential to be a great WR, and Joe Staley who is the fastest Left Tackle in the league. After reading this laundry list of improvements HOW ON EARTH IS IT POSSIBLE FOR SMITH NOT TO IMPROVE? HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE REGRESS FROM A 7-9 TEAM TO A 4-12 RECORD?!!? THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE NOR LOGIC BEHIND YOUR ARGUMENTS. KEVAN LEE YOU ARE A FRAUD, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T EMBARRASS YOURSELF BY TRYING TO PASS YOURSELF OFF AS A KNOWLEDGEABLE FOOTBALL COLUMNIST.

  35. "I have the Niners winning four games because I can't see them playing as well with a target on their backs and extra pressure all around them. Their schedule starts out extremely tough (St. Louis, Pitt, Seattle, Baltimore in a row), and if they lose those games, detractors are going to start piling on."

First off looking at the beginning of our schedule its not as tough as you make it out to be. We swept Seattle, and we beat St.Louis so we know that we can handle them. Baltimore is the only team that might give us trouble. Pitt has a new coach, they are starting a new defense and they havent done much to improve same goes for Seattle and St.Louis. WHAT HAVE THEY HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE SO DRASTICALLY THAT WE WILL HAVE A TOUGH TIME AGAINST THEM.

  36. Dear Joe,

Thanks for the well-informed rebuttal. Here's my fraudulent reply.

The numbers from Smith's first season to his second obviously improved; how could they not. But his game-by-game results throughout 2006 were inconsistent. He was solid in the first three games, but then threw up a stinker in Week four. He was great against Oakland and good against San Diego. He had passer ratings in the fifties in his next two games, and bounced back with good games against the Lions and Seahawks (the latter, I feel was the team's best game of the year). After the Seattle game, the team was riding a three-game winning streak and all sorts of momentum. What did Smith do with it? He threw seven interceptions over his next three games (all losses) and barely completed half of his passes.

Regarding his supporting cast this year, Vernon Davis will replace Eric Johnson's production. The offensive line will be an improvement over last year's unit, which should give him more time to throw and read through his progressions. Arnaz Battle is an adequate receiver.

However, he is not built to be a number one guy. Darrell Jackson's toe injury still seems to be nagging him, which will relegate him to number two status. When healthy (which is growing more and more rare), he is a good NFL wide receiver, but he is only as good as his quarterback. He drops too many balls and can disappear for weeks at a time. Even though the offense is built for Ashley Lelie will not mean he has a good year. He can't separate from an NFL cornerback, and he can't catch very well. Rookie Jason Hill may be good down the road, but traditionally rookie wide receivers do not make that big of an impact.

As always, we won't know for sure how things turn out until the regular season. If Smith and the 49ers have a great year, I will gladly eat my words. But until they do, it sure is fun to debate about them.

  37. I will be throwing this opinion of the Niners in the folder that holds such moronic and uneducated opinions. You see I like to bring them back later and watch little worms squirm while trying to explain themselves.

  38. Kevan,
Your dribble that you pass off as writing does not proove anything except you know absolutely nothing about the San Francisco 49ers.
    You are an idiot.

  39. Kevan you are an absolute moron. You have no clue what the hell you are talking about. I stopped reading after you asked if "Smith could step up after teams commit to stop Gore." Not sure if you bothered watching any 49ers game last season, but every team tried stopping Gore. And every team failed. Just ask Seattle how well that commitment from them to stop Gore worked. Seriously remove your mouth from Brady's cock long enough to realize how clueless you are.

  40. This has to be a joke. First off, take that poll in the top right of the page and you will see that about 57% think 49ers will win the NFC West. 4-12? Dude, we were 7-9 last year and we have only made improvements. Jackson, Clements, Lewis, Lelie, Banta-Cain are just some of the players we have added to the team. And we got two great players in the first round of the draft, Willis and Staley. We may have lost Norv Turner, but that is it. So tell me, how long have you been on the Patriots bandwagon?

  41. FUCK YOU !!!

  42. ones lost the others looking for it you must think that your opion will mean something to tell everyone that the niners should be scared to be good are you 12 yrs old the niners are the best franchise in history 5 times they have been 5 rings . in case i'm right and thats to complacated thats a never lost the big game record which is the most well known talented teams go the last time i checked so i think maybe the team and its fans that went from a dynisty team to a laughing stock becouse the salary cap hit us the hardest with players like montana youg rice and them are just players even a 12 yr old would still have heard about and if you still have dobts i will put any amount of money on tv or just you and me that the niners will win more than 4 games p.s. or 5,6,7, and niner nation rules so much i will see you supporting us next yr becouse you only believe what you see and this your you will see that with better receivers smith will look like a 1 sel. and gore will be 1 runnig back this yr becouse of the fear of smith thorwing the deep ball will keep the d's honest

    putting skin on it

  43. I know what it's like to get the backlash from a bunch of 49ers fans... and unlike this guy, I actually am a 49ers fan.

Kevin is right that there are a ton of question marks the Niners face. And they were very fortunate to end last season at 7-9. While I think that the 4-12 prediction is a bit harsh, I do not consider these guys a playoff team yet.

  44. Kevan,
You cannot bash the 9ers and not expect a backlash. You have legitimate beefs with the different aspects of the team but where you screwed up was predicting a 4-12 record. That part alone makes the rest of your article complete shit. There is no way possible they'll go that far backwards. C'mon guy, adnit it, you hate the 9ers for all their years of dominance huh? Did they break your heart as a youngster when your favorite team got whipped? Stop hating and change your bullshit prediction. That's the only way to respectability.

  45. So the Ninnies have their panties in a bunch because K Lee ended the asskissing hype that has been centered around Frisco this offseason by laying a smackdown of brutally honest reality.

Alex Smith? They'd be better off starting Dilfer.

Ashley Lelie? Would you like fries with that?

Nate Clements? With that fat wallet from his signing bonus, he'll have trouble keeping up with the NFC West receivers.

What's hilarious is that the damn Ninnies fans are all up in arms, but by the time the season rolls around, they'll be too busy sipping Chardonnay and eating sushi rolls outside Candlecrap Park to notice that their precious Ninners are worse off than last year, but at the same type ridiculously overpaid.

And to top it off, they probably won't win as many games as the Raiders. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Ninnies.

So you go, Kevan Lee, tell it like it is and piss off all these damn Ninnies. Maybe they'll go home and cry to mommy, then pass a law that says you can't take a crap in a public toilet without getting permission from the city council. It's damned ridiculous...

  46. You gotz to be a stupid azz motha f#@!er to getz fired on yo day off!!

  47. It is completely obvious you are gay by the picture in your profile. It must me hard being a pickle sucker writing on a man's sport. You issues aren't just with the 9ers but with your sexuality too. I'm not judging, go suck all the dix you want, more women for me. Just don't hate the 9ers sooo much. Did Jeff Garcia fuck you over (literally) when he was there? What's the prob?

  48. Kevan,

You have just effectively flip-flopped your position on half the points that you made in your article.

You obviously feel stupid from reading the responses to your "work" and all of a sudden developed a much more likeable tone of voice.

May I suggest something? As you sit in Idaho on the Patriot bandwagon dreaming about Tom Brady busting a wad on your face, think about getting into a different line of work...Maybe something in waste management because that's exactly what this article deserves, for reasons already stated 200 times before me. Dummy.

  49. You punk ass Haider fan, you must be white trash. Go back in your trailor with you sister/lover (or is it brother/lover?) and have another hit of crack. You know nothing about football you idiot.

  50. Classy picture there, Dave.
Is it you want us Niner Fans to smell your finger after you've taken out of Kevan's ass?
You're as big an idiot as he is.

  51. "But keep in mind, that just because a team is moving in the right direction does not always mean that they will win more games than last year."

So if they are moving the in right direction what makes you think they will LOSE more games?

You are banking on basically every Niner starter to flop. This team can easily win more than 4 games with Dilfer at QB let alone Smith.

  52. The Ninnies have spoken and the homophobia runs thick. I won't get into the reputation and demographic breakdown of the City by the Bay, but lets just say if they aren't comfortable with what's going on in their own backyard, its probably time to find a new place to roost.

As I said, take a hike Ninnies. I hear its nice in Canada these days. It's a damn shame what's going on in this great country of ours, especially when a bunch of damn Ninnies can't tell their heads from their asses.

  53. do u realize why? because you write crap like this. Your just about as good a writer as Kevan Barlow is a RB. I guess there's some curse in the name that makes you suck at life..
I admit, the 9ers are not gonna win the superbowl this year and I really dont know how good our chances are for making the playoffs. but in the end, we are part of the NFC west and WILL NOT end up with a 4-12 record. The team has improved by leaps and bounds. We have added depth to the secondary with the signings of lewis and clements and will be much better against the pass. Having clements and walt harris gives us 2 solid corners. Nate's contract is actually much more cap friendly than most amateur football fans believe, and since you are a sports writer I am surprised that you did not do your research. Next time, actually know what your talking about dumbfuck. Also, in his six seasons in the NFL, clements numbers are better than Bailey's first 6 seasons.
I admit, Turner's departure will hurt the offense, but this is Alex Smith's second year in the same system and the 49ers have put weapons around him. Expect Vernon Davis to be even better and cause some of the NFC West defenses to have fits. Also, the team has upgraded its WRs with the addition of D-Jax, Lelie and Jason Hill. Coupled with Arnaz Battle and Brandon Williams I think that this is a decent recieving squad. The addition of Je Staley will also help us a lot because we can finally get rid of Kwame "the penalty machine" Harris.
Also, Patrick Willis will help bolster our LB core along with Banta Cain and a developing Manny Lawson and Aubrayo Franklin will help plug up the run. The 49ers will end up with a 9-7 or 10-6 record and will contend for, if not make, the playoffs.

  54. http://www.bleacherreport.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1349

And of course Moss is Golden in his eyes.

"Bottom line: New England got an elite receiver for an offense that badly needed one. They could have done no better with their fourth-round pick this year, which already makes the trade worth every penny."

Moss hasnt been elite since 04.The Niners ALSO only gave up a fourth rounder for Jackson and he has been more productive than Moss in recent years. All the praise in the world for Moss because he is on your favorite team(favorite since 01 BTW)but nothing but pesimist shit talk over the Niners moves.

  55. Alex's inconsistent play was partially his fault yes but you have to take into account the lack of support he was getting. Take this for example, Gore amounted for 80% of our offensive production. What does that tell you? Outside of Gore he had absolutely no one. Smith was the product of VANILLA PLAY CALLING and a weak supporting cast. If you want to blame Smith for his shortcomings some of it also goes to Norv. His play calling had no creativeness to it and he was toning it down.

Now on too the receivers, here is why Lelie will flourish if he gets his shit together. Lelie has been in a the WCO his whole career ( which is in short a finesse running game, short passes with precise execution with timing) this offense does not fit Lelie's skillset. We run the air coryell (power running game, long deep passes that stretch the field.) This is the offense that he was meant to play in, Lelie does have the speed despite what you say. and as for Jackson, i have all the faith in the world that he will be ready opening day.

So please Kevan after this season i want you to write another column and eat your words. YOu bring up good points but it is just ridiculous to even think that the 49ers would 4-12 after we had the best offseason in the nfl. And for dave you obviously just exposed yourself for shit eating retard that you are after you made this comment
"And to top it off, they probably won't win as many games as the Raiders." I don't think this is physically possible but i would image someone like yourself would be able to accomplish this amazing feat. GO FUCK YOURSELF!

  56. You definently proved you are a uninformed piece of shit Raider fan. I don't even know where to start. You don't know shit about the niners.

This is A.Smith's third year. The progression from his rookie year )21 years old) to last year was tremendous. And he is still the youngest starting QB in the NFL as of Week 1 on paper. He will be ALOT better this year, he is a smart guy who is getting more and more mature mentally and physically.

Vernon Davis will improve his hands, he has all the other tools to be the best tight end in the leauge and a Defensive Coordinator's worst nightmare.

Our reciever aren't the best, but mark it right now Arnaz Battle will surprise, and D.Jax is a good reciever.

F.Gore is a beast, with a great leading blocker in Moran Norris. Our O-Line is top five to eight in the leauge.

Our D is vastly improved. We have three corners who are starting calibur. We signed Micheal Lewis who was benched in Philly because of problems with the coaching staff not cause of his play. P.Willis is a stud, B.Moore is going to raise eyes as is Manny Lawson.

We do need a better pass rush, that is our biggest weakness. But saying 4-12 for the niners makes me want to slap the taste out your ugly mouth. Are you kidding me? we were 7-9 last year, you think we are that much worse? WTF? Maybe not playoffs but 8-8 at the worst...

So, you are a Raider fan right?

  57. Thats actually worst considering patriot fans are the biggest fucking bandwagoners in the history of sports.

  58. AAAAHAHAHAHAHA look at this Chokeland Fader fan!!!! U call San Francisco as a breakdown by the bay, and exactly what does ur sad excuse of a city in Chokeland have that's any better? Oh yeah that's right, homes on wheels!

So u think we should start Dilfer huh? Why don't ur sad ass team start winning? No wait, wait. Ur sorry team should start making use of such great talent then win games! Seriously jackass ur team has all that talent yet they can't capitalize by winning sum football games...oh my gawd its so saad that J.Russell landed into a team that doesn't know how to use talent...oh well!

Let's see, Ashley Lelie. Dude just do some research so i don't have to embarass your dumbass. Seriously cuz u write really dumb shit that u probably pulled out of the Faders(as a whole group!) ass.

Now Clements. are you just pissed cuz ur sorry ass team was out of the playoff hunt when the season began? You must've been to say that Clements' contract will have a negative effect on his play. And yes, I will be sipping Chardonnay when the Niners stomp all over ur team's sorry ass. And now that u mention it, i also will be eating sushi when they do.

By the way, while you're researching u should research what kind of schedule your sorry ass team is burdened with compared to our's.

  59. I feel torn in this discussion.

On the one hand, Kevan Lee is my man and one helluva writer. I generally agree with the sentiments that he expresses on Bleacher Report and I think it's a gutsy move to call the Niners out at 4-12 when many are predicting that they will make the playoffs.

On the other hand, the San Francisco 49ers are my favorite team in any sport, always have been. I feel a great deal of loyalty towards them and I've been assuming they will have a huge season.

I think Kevan raises some interesting points: Alex Smith is still largely unproven and therefore it's really difficult to tell whether he'll be able to get it done in the air to the point that defenses won't key in and stuff Frank Gore and his 28 million dollar contract extension.

I also agree with Kevan that a cornerback is only one player out of 11, and that while Clements is great his impact can only be so large. 80 million on one corner?

All this being said, I do think the Niners are going to post a winning record. Gore had one helluva year last season while Smith was throwing marginally, and I'm guessing Smith will in fact improve in 07'.

Darrell Jackson is no Jerry Rice, but he's posted 1000+ yards in three seasons in his seven year career. Arnaz Battle is no John Taylor, but his numbers have steadily improved since he came into the league. The receiving corps ain't what it used to be, but it's still fairly solid.

Predicted finish: 10-6, 1st in the NFC West!

But seriously Kevan: it takes a real man to stick by his opinion when 50 Niner fans are cussing you out. Way to be stand up for what you believe.

  60. Sure Clements is just 1 of 11. But getting Clements we now have amazing depth at CB. We have the best 3 deep corners in the league. Clements - Harris - Spencer.

  61. this has got to be the dumbest article ever. this guy needs to get a clue. first clements contract isnt 80 its more like 6 yr 50 million. who will do the rush passing? hmm let me see check moores stats toward end of last season, banta cain, lawson in his 2nd year, the 4.36 patrick willis, mike lewis who will be used around line of scrimmage like his good years in philly. our offense was fine last year and we added DJax and we have a healthy V davis. ashe lelie will not be a starter so we really arnt expecting a 1000 season out of him. This guy needs to get a clue!!!

  62. The Niners have always prided themselves on great secondaries, but I sorta feel like we're not focused enough on improving our D up front. Patrick Willis is a fabulous addition but his strength is run defense. Admittedly though, Brandon Moore has played well his last two seasons and Banta Cain should be a solid addition.

Overall, I think the Nines look pretty good (obviously, I'm predicting them to go 10-6!) I'm just saying, Kevan makes some solid rebuttals as to why they may nevertheless struggle this season even though most feel they have improved their roster.

Only time will tell who is right and wrong...God I can't wait for the season to get rolling.

  63. hey queer, i agree with everyone on here that ripped you a new one. I just wanna say that it would be almost impossible to find one unbaised writer that would agree with this bullshit.... YOU F*cking SUCK!!

  64. Alex will be at least as good this year as he was last year. Anyone who says he won't is just ignorant.

"Lelie could have been a world-class deep threat. Jackson should have been able to stay injury-free for a full season by now. And Battle would have been better off staying a quarterback."

Battle would never have mad a roster spot as a Quarterback. You are talking out your "a" here.

you are picking Franklin as the player to watch. This is our weakest position on the field and the one we addressed the least. Why the confidence here when you ignore reasons for confidence everywhere else.

Ultimately this is just insane. The niners were 7 - 9 last year and they have improved noticably at every position on the field. Lest say that we were just plain lucky to be 7-9 last year. The worst we will be this year is 7-9. I can't believe this site will host your insane babbling.

  65. I love to see writers have the balls to buck a trend and stand up against a tidal wave of folly. Good teams are built through chemistry. Seattle had the same team for three years and it took them until the third to get to the Super Bowl. Incidentally, in the second of those three years, they were swept in the regular season by the Rams, and then lost to them in the first round.
Do the Niners have a bright future? Certainly, if they can keep the big-position players, improve at WR, OL, DL, and maybe safety. But keep in mind, that's the future. Not the present. Sorry, Niners fans. Hope this year, expect in 09, demand in 2010.

  66. How long have you been on the Patriots bandwagon? They make improvements in the offseason and they are your #1 team. The 49ers make improvements and you expect them to do worse. I mean, I know the Patriots are a stronger team. But you can't deny that the 49ers are going to improve over last years record. They do have a tough schedule to start off with, you're right, but overall it's one of the easiest in the league.

  67. your a mean hater!!! just cuz the 49ers are improving and are no longer other teams easy win your hating on us well every team has sucked in some time in their franchise and now ours past get over it!!!!

  68. What an assmelvin...what a bunch of unsubstantiated crap.

  69. I do not hate the Niners. I am not a Raiders fan. My love for the New England Patriots began long ago during the Drew Bledsoe era, so you can rest assured that I did not fall in love in the midst of any sort of good times. My gushing preview of them will be on bleacher report next week.

I enjoy reading the comments from everyone who is up in arms over what I said, but I really enjoy reading the Niner fans who have trepidation. I think you have a good team on your hands, and I think that in the next 2-3 years they will be consistently challenging for a division title--maybe even a conference title. Why did I say 4-12 this year? Not because I'm a hater, not because I'm gay, not because I'm any number of expletives, but because I think this team has some serious issues to work through before it gets to where everyone else thinks it will be.

I see 4-12 as a worse case scenario. And here's my breakdown of wins and losses:
    Week One: Arizona, win
    St. Louis, loss
    Pittsburgh, loss
    Seattle, loss
    Baltimore, loss
    New York Giants, loss
    New Orleans, loss
    Atlanta, win
    Seattle, loss
    St. Louis, loss
    Arizona, loss
    Carolina, loss
    Minnesota, win
    Cincinnati, loss
    Tampa Bay, win
Cleveland, loss (only because this game won't matter)
There you have it. The 49ers play the NFC South and AFC North, which are two tough divisions. I think Seattle will be out for revenge, St. Louis will be a great team this year, and Arizona will be good enough to earn a split.

In an effort for civilized discussion, what games do you think the Niners will win out of these that I picked for losses?

  70. To all you people out there who are using a million cuss words: I like the Niners as much as you do. But when we're trying to have an intelligent debate and you keep saying "you f*cking suck" or "suck my wang" or "you're gay," it kind of makes us look bad, ya know?

If you disagree with Kevan, simply say why. Or better yet, sign up for an account and let the community hear your opinion.

  71. ...and where can I get some?

  72. Well, first of all, we wll NOT be swept by neither Seattle, nor St. Louis. We swept Seattle last season and came this close of doing the same to the Rams. And out of these 3 franchises, we are the most improved one! So, when you say we are going to be swept by the Hawks, all your basing yourself at is their "desire for revenge"?? Second of all, Pitt has a new coaching staff, while the Giants are a big mess right now (have you hear the rumors about Strahan's retirement?). And do you really believe in Atlanta with Harrington at the helm??

  73. With all due respect to Arizona, the Niners are going to sweep them. They are a team on the rise but for now they are still the Arizona Cardinals, who haven't had a .500 record EVER in the last ten years.

And I think the Nines will split with the Rams and the Seahawks. The Seahawks are presumably a stronger team with Hasselback and Alexander back in action, but then again so are the Niners. I don't see the tides reversing from the Niners sweeping to the Seahawks sweeping; worse case scenario will be a split.

I don't think the Rams have improved enough this off-season to sweep the Niners. Carriker is awesome, but he's primarily a pass rusher look for Frank Gore to run all over the Rams once again.

I also see them beating three of these four teams, or two at the very least: Cincinnati, NY Giants, Pittsburgh & Carolina.

Here's another way of looking at it: the only games we're losing for sure are the Ravens and Saints.

  74. At least one Seahawks and Rams game
    Browns
and maybe the Giants and Steelers

The 49ers had some surprise wins last year. Beat the Seahawks twice and beat the Broncos when they NEEDED to win. So I am expecting for the Niners to win at least one or two tough games.

  75. Look I am a die hard Niner fan, and while I am not puching my ticket for the SB, I do think this team has to be at least as good as it was last year. The added too much talent on D not to be. And the D was their weakest aspect last year.

You asked for civilized discussion, so here you go:

    Additions:
Clements - The $80 million figure is bloated, the deal actually is only worth about $62, even less if voided after year 3 or 4. That said, Buffalo or not, he is one of the top 10 CB's in the NFL, and actually the Bills had a pretty good D last year.

The pass rush - I'll give you TBC is unproven, but in what playing time he got, he was more then effective. Playing behind BY, Franklin and Douglas should allow him to continue. Lawson showed last year that he can easily replace Peterson in the coverage department and extra year in the weight room should return him the pass rushing form that gave him #'s comparable to Mario Williams @ NCSt. Not to mention the improved secondary will only help the pass rush.

WR's - There is still a big whole here. Jackson is a 1A receiver, Battle a 2A-3. I wasn't impressed by the Lelie signing, but if he ever gets on the field and can stretch a D it will open things for the not so secret weapon, Vernon Davis. He showed against the Cards and Packers just how big a weapon he can be. He is TO playing TE (lets just hope the TO attitude doesn't continue). Hill could end up being this years M Colston.

Alex Smith - Listen to a Mike Nolan interview about Smith and you will realize one thing. They don't expect him to win games on his own. He is not Brett Favre or Tom Brady, but I think the games against Seattle (on National TV) and Denver showed that he is more then capable of commanding the team and getting them a win.

    So the schedule:
    Arizona, win
    St. Louis, loss
    Pittsburgh, loss
    Seattle, win
    Baltimore, loss
New York Giants, win, Strahan is talking about retirement, the players don't like their coach, and talk about a QB that looks like he is lost... this will be the game that costs Coughlin his job
    New Orleans, loss
    Atlanta, win
    Seattle, loss
    St. Louis, win
    Arizona, loss
    Carolina, loss
    Minnesota, win
    Cincinnati, loss
    Tampa Bay, win
Cleveland, win, the Browns are a terrible team and probably will be using a new coach by mid-season

8-8. I think this team is at least good enough to split their division if not take 2 from at least one team (they have done so the last 2 years, remember 2 of their 4 wins in 05 were against the Rams and they should have won 2 last year if not Nolan's bonehead 4th and 1 call).

  76. Sep 10 Arizona W - We will open the season and display our dominance over Arizona.
    Sep 16 @St. Louis L - St.Louis wins at home
Sep 23 @Pittsburgh W - Pitt has been on the downfall since there super bowl victory, we go into the steel city and show them who is who.
Sep 30 Seattle 4:05pm W - We usually have our way with seattle, nothing is going to change.
    Oct 7 Baltimore L - Baltimore's D proves to be too much
    Week 6 BYE
Oct 21 @N.Y. Giants W - Eli Manning is way to inconsistent and there defense is in shambles.
Oct 28 New Orleans L - NO's high powered offense has its way with D.
Nov 4 @Atlanta W - Atlanta is dead in the water without VIck, their defense is a joke.
Nov 12 @Seattle W - Seattle reign of the NFC West is over
Nov 18 St. Louis W - We stop them at home.
Nov 25 @Arizona L - Arizona wins in the desert.
Dec 2 @Carolina W - It depends which Panthers team decides to show up, either way Delhomme erratic style of play be our ticket to victory.
Dec 9 Minnesota W - Same as last year battle of the defenses.
Dec 15 Cincinnati L - Palmer and co. get this one.
Dec 23 Tampa Bay W - Tampa is in shambles, easy win
Dec 30 @Cleveland Win or Lose - This can go either way.

In the end we i think we will end the season 10-6(with a playoff birth), i am pretty sure that can win us the division.

    The se
