Johnson & Wales Universtiy is a school with deep roots in business and the culinary arts. As with all major NCAA football schools, the students take pride in their university and there is an interest in football. As a freshman, I am settling in and getting used to the surroundings. The city of Providence is a beautiful city that is home to many schools, and the young student population is vibrant. The JWU community is a strong and fairly united one. Most students I have talked to would like to see a football team.
There are many skilled former high school football players on campus. From small games on the scattered patches of grass to large games in the green spaces, the talent is there. Most of all, the passion is there. These kids will go through full days of classes and strap on their shoes to play a little football - just for the love of it.
What do you look for in a football team? Talent? We got it. Passion? No question. people willing to play? Absolutely. JWU is known for its strong alumni base, full of celebrity chefs and successful professionals. JWU has such a diverse community that could be brought together more by a football team. We know it will take money. We know it won't be easy. But we want it. We are interested and willing to work for it. If we were to get a team, I know I would have to fight to be on it. I'm ok with that. I know if that team comes around there will be 10 other guys lining up on that side of the ball with me. I used to dread two-a-days in August, but now I can't wait.
I love it all: the smell of the grass, the sound of helmets and shoulder pads colliding, the sight of that other guy running at you, and the burning of your lungs and legs after practice. I Love it, and so do my teammates.
We're waiting for our shot. Let us show the NCAA what JWU is all about.
