FC Augsburg and FC Bayern München will play each other once again, though in a different competition. This Bavarian derby takes place in the DFB Pokal, also known as the German Cup.

Augsburg and Markus Weinzierl are battling against relegation. They played Fürth this weekend and drew 1-1. That was the last result they needed considering that they are in desperate need of points. Sascha Mölders scored once again after returning from injury. This means that Augsburg remains second from bottom.

The previous meeting between the two was quite exciting. Bayern wasn’t at their best. Weinzierl set his team up perfectly as well. They caused Bayern trouble but conceded two goals at the other end. Everybody associated with Augsburg was proud of that performance. However, pride in itself will not be enough to save Augsburg.

Bayern, meanwhile, is also coming into this one on the back of a draw. They should have beaten Borussia Mönchengladbach considering they were undoubtedly the dominant side. Lucien Favre’s joy at the final whistle showed just how much pressure his team was put under for the entire ninety minutes.

The frustration of not having picked up three points at home was evident amongst the Bayern faithful. However, Bayern does lead the Bundesliga by nine points. They have a twelve point lead over last season’s champions, Borussia Dortmund. They played Jahn Regensburg in a Bavarian derby in the first round of the cup and won 4-0. The story was the same against Kaiserslautern in the following round.

Javier Martinez suffered an injury scare. He had to be taken off against Gladbach after he received a blow to his face. He temporarily lost vision in his left eye. Martinez is believed to have recovered enough to be available for this match. Luiz Gustavo is yet to return. Holger Badstuber is out for the season. It seems like Arjen Robben will not be ready for this one either.

Simon Jentzsch is still out for Augsburg. Mohammad Amsif will continue deputizing in goal for them. Sebastien Langkamp also might not be ready.

This might be the line-up for this Bavarian side:

Tom Starke

Diego Contento - Dante - Jerome Boateng - Rafinha

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk - Bastian Schweinsteiger

Thomas Müller - Toni Kroos - Xherdan Shaqiri

Mario Gomez

In other interesting cup clashes, Borussia Dortmund takes on Hannover 96, and Schalke, who recently fired Huub Stevens, takes on Thomas Tuchel’s Mainz under their new coach Jens Keller.

Prediction: FC Augsburg 1-2 FC Bayern
