Kliff Kingsbury Will Energize Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2013
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Kliff Kingsbury will bring a renewed energy and level of excitement to Lubbock and Texas Tech's football program in 2013 that was lacking under former head coach Tommy Tuberville.

Kingsbury, a record-setting quarterback for the Red Raiders from 1998 to 2002, will return to his alma mater as the head coach after being hired on Wednesday.

The former Texas A&M offensive coordinator made a name for himself this season, coaching Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel to 4,600 total yards and 43 touchdowns. Regardless of how much credit you or I give Kingsbury for Johnny Football's success, there's no question he is deserving of his most recent promotion.

His Aggies offense ranked third in total offense (552.3 total yards per game) and third in scoring offense (44.8 points per game) this past season.

But more so than his offensive genius, Kingsbury's sideline energy and calm postgame demeanor is sure to wear off on his players and ultimately create a better atmosphere, one conducive to winning in Lubbock.

In College Station this past season, Kingsbury was constantly demonstrating faith in his players with bold play-calling and pumping them up with positive reinforcement. He brings an element of fun to the college game, especially on the offensive side of the ball as fans have witnessed in the past.

Of course the Kingsbury doubters will point to his limited coaching experience, consisting of just a few years as an offensive coordinator with Houston and Texas A&M.

But making the right hire comes down to much more than experience and credentials. After all, Texas Tech went that route three years ago with little success to show for it. Not many coaches in college football have had as much experience or success as Tommy Tuberville, and we've seen how that worked out for Texas Tech.

It remains to be seen what sort of success the Red Raiders achieve under their new hire, but either way Kingsbury is guaranteed to provide Texas Tech fans with a brand of football they can be proud of.
