BLACKSBURG His Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was less than a week from starting its first season under new coach James Johnson, but sophomore guard Marquis Rankin knew where he had to be. And it wasn’t Blacksburg.

On Nov. 4, Rankin’s great grandmother and great uncle both passed away unexpectedly in separate incidents in North Carolina. Rankin headed home.
