Pacquiao vs. Marquez: How Pac-Man's Defeat Ruled the Internet

Donald WoodDec 11, 2012

When boxing veteran Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1) knocked out legend Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2) in the sixth round of Saturdayโ€™s main event, the internet exploded and captivated the world for the weekend.

Few other athletes can polarize the world like Pacquiao does, and Saturdayโ€™s loss was just another example of how many people care about the fighter.

Seconds after one of the biggest upset losses in history, the internet exploded with videos, GIFs and memes making fun of the situation. While some were mean and hate-filled, most were downright hilarious.

The following pieces of media have been blowing up since Pacquiaoโ€™s knockout, and you canโ€™t afford to miss any of these amazing creations.

Memes

After almost knocking out Marquez in the fifth round and taking the Mexican star to his limit in the sixth, JMM clearly "Hulked" and walked away with the victory. This is an amazing creation (h/t spicybean.tumblr.com):

As if the comparisons to Mike Tysonโ€™s devastating loss to Buster Douglas in 1990 werenโ€™t enough, the Pacquiao defeat was translated into the Nintendo era for some quality time in Punch Out!! (media.tumblr.com):

For the fans rooting for Pacquiao to steal the win and silence the critics, this throwback image to the time of the Lion King makes you feel the sadness of the situation. Or laugh hysterically (media.tumblr.com):

Just when you thought it was safe to make a "Smooth Criminal" reference, arguably the best meme of the night came along and stole the show. Bravo, Michael Jackson (sunshinekiss15.tumblr.com):

For the wrestling fan in the family, the idea of WWE legend The Rock dropping the peopleโ€™s elbow on an out-cold Pacquiao is something too funny to fathom. Thank goodness itโ€™s a reality (Black Sports Online):

Just like George Michael from Arrested Development, sometimes the stresses of the day are too much, and a nap right here and now is absolutely necessary (h/t YardBarker):

As if the horrible attacks via memes and GIFs werenโ€™t enough, the amazing people at NMA World Edition created an animated video. It truly is one of the oddest videos you will ever see.

What We Learned

As much as boxing fans want to complain about Pacquiao or the lack of a super fight between Pac-Man and Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao made the night interesting.

While the legend has lost his last two fights, he is one of the greatest boxers to ever live and should be heralded as a champion. There is no doubt that a post-boxing political career is already taking away some of his focus, and the end may be near for his career.

The boxing fans who donโ€™t like Pacquiao or his style should enjoy it while they have it. Once Pac-Man and Mayweather retire, there arenโ€™t many top names left in the sport.

As much as all the hilarious media proves he is polarizing, Pac-Man puts the people in the seats.

Without him, boxing is in trouble.
