UFC on FOX 5 Results: What We Learned from Jeremy Stephens vs. Yves Edwards
In a lightweight battle Saturday night at UFC on Fox 5, the venerable Yves Edwards emphatically turned the tables on Jeremy Stephens with a first-round knockout victory.
Edwards (42-18-1) ducked away from a heat-seeking right hand and landed a perfect counter right on the jaw of Stephens (20-9). It was the first striking-related stoppage loss in Stephens' career.
What we'll remember about this fight
Both men swung their hammers at almost exactly the same time. The better fighter's punch was the one that landed.
What we learned about Jeremy Stephens
I suppose he can be knocked out after all.
What we learned about Yves Edwards
The old man's still got it. Not a classic knockout artist, Edwards unquestionably has some of the nicest skills in the middle of the lightweight division. In his last four, he has gone win-loss-win-loss.
What's next for Stephens
That's the third straight loss for Stephens, but the UFC has shown a willingness to give a longer leash to exciting fighters. Stephens certainly fits that bill. The loser in this month's tilt between Jamie Varner and Melvin Guillard would make an exciting opponent.
What's next for Edwards
Maybe some bubbles, maybe a trip to his native Bahamas, then John "The Bull" Makdessi.
