Basketball fans remember Shaquille O'Neal and Darryl Dawkins breaking an NBA backboard back in the day, but Ako Kaluna's moment is just as memorable.
Kaluna is a massive high-school basketball player. After taking one look at him, it's obvious that he's truly a man among boys. That was never more evident than it was in that video.
As Kaluna's West Ranch High School teammates matriculate the ball up the court, you can see the big man (No. 12) trotting his way up the court as well.
As the ball is thrown crosscourt, Kaluna fills the lane, either looking for a dump-off pass and a layup, or a rebound. Obviously, he found the latter as his teammate decided to take the ball to the rim.
What's scarier is that Kaluna did this with ease. Backboards aren't meant to hold 270-pound athletes, and the rim separated from the glass like nothing. Just listening to the crowd's reaction, it's obvious that this isn't something that they see everyday.
Kaluna doesn't just break backboards. According to Max Preps, he's averaging 19.3 points and 14.7 rebounds per game. His size alone must allow him to clear space underneath game after game.
It's one thing to watch a renowned big man like Shaq or Chocolate Thunder throw one down and rip the rim away from the backboard, sending shards of glass onto the floor and forcing everyone to duck for cover, but this isn't as expected.
No one walks into a high-school gym expecting to see this happen. Dunking in and of itself is exciting at that level, let alone this stunning display of strength.
Kaluna may or may not go on to play college hoops, but this ensures that he will be remembered one way or another.
