TCU freshman and former Arlington Martin High School standout Devonte Fields was named The Associated Press Big 12 defensive player of the year and defensive newcomer of the year after leading the league with 17 1/2 tackles for a loss and finishing second with nine sacks. TCU linebacker Kenny Cain and cornerback Jason Verrett joined Fields on the first-team defense. Defensive end Stansly Maponga and safety Sam Carter were named to the AP's second-team defense.
