The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
Hey, when I said rapid fire, I meant it.
Not to get off subject, but Paul Pierce for MVP!
Anyway, on with the mock draft…
Pick No. 25: Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks were an enigma to me all season long.
Every time I watched them, I was less than impressed. Yet they won enough games to once again take the NFC West and even managed to eek out a playoff victory.
Obviously they were a little better than I gave them credit for.
Not much better, mind you (it WAS the NFC West), but certainly a little better.
I’m not sure I buy Holmgren’s theory that they’re good enough to make one last Super Bowl run. They have some serious holes that need filling. They could use help on the defensive line, and their offensive line is hardly Super Bowl quality. They also lack any real presence at the wide receiver position.
Hey, I’m from New England. I love Deion Branch. If I have to complete one pass in a huge game, I might look in his direction over anyone else on the Patriots or Seahawks’ rosters.
He’s clutch.
But he’s not a guy who gets you to the playoffs—he can’t stay healthy for an entire season. He’s a guy who can help you win once you get there.
Outside of Branch, there isn’t a wide receiver that scares anyone on that team. Not a single guy. An entire team of second and third wide receivers, similar to the 2006 Patriots.
Only Matt Hasselbeck is no Tom Brady.
Before they signed Julius Jones, I had them taking a running back here. Not that Julius is the end-all, be-all for running backs, but I can’t see them taking ANOTHER running back this early in the draft.
Outside of RB offensive line is the biggest need. At some point they need to get themselves an offensive guard, but the best available guy in the mock draft right now is a humongous tackle.
The Pick: Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt
Walter Jones is getting a little old, and if he gets hurt (as old offensive linemen tend to do) in will step Tom Ashworth.
Holmgren knows he isn’t getting to the Super Bowl with Tom Ashworth playing left tackle.
Chris Williams can step right in at the right tackle spot and can be groomed to eventually take over for Walter Jones.
Chris Williams, if he is the first round pick, won’t be the last offensive lineman they take. They still need a guard who can run-block. Shaun Alexander might have gotten old before our eyes, but he didn’t get THAT old.
A hole every now and then might have been the fountain of youth he was looking for.
Regardless of my opinion, the Seahawks will be the odds on favorite to win the NFC West once again in 2008. If things fall right, they might be able to send Holmgren out on top.
I don’t expect that to happen, but then again, I never thought the Patriots would lose to the Giants either. So what do I know?
