Throughout the first two periods of the Dec. 2 contest between WCHA rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota, the teams were scoreless. This gave Badgers fans the impression that they would be capable of snapping the Golden Gophers record breaking NCAA winning streak.

A tripping penalty to Wisconsin’s Madison Packer at 7:34 of the final frame would prove to be the turning point in the contest. On the power play in the third period, Mira Jalosuo scored what would be the game winning tally at the 9:14 mark. Assisted by Sarah Davis and Becky Kortum, the Golden Gophers were able to preserve their lead. The second goal of the game came at the 19:50 mark as Amanda Kessel scored in an empty net for her 22nd of the campaign.

Although remarkable rookie Hannah Brandt was held scoreless in this contest (a key accomplishment by the Badgers defense), the Gophers proved why they are the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. In the second and third periods, the Gophers outshot the Badgers by a combined 31-8 mark. Megan Bozek led all players with eight shots.

The sweep of the Badgers is the first for the program since Jan. 29-30, 2005.

While Alex Rigsby made 36 saves, her record fell to 10-6-2, the worst start in her stellar career. Noora Raty continues to make her case as a strong contender for the 2013 Patty Kazmaier Award. The shutout is number 33 in her career, six away from tying the record set by Jessie Vetter of Wisconsin. Her win is the 92nd for the Gophers, putting her eight wins away from tying Hillary Pattenden for the all-time record.
