The overrated Georgetown Hoyas have been eliminated from this year's NCAA tournament by a score of 74-70. What happened to the Hoyas can only be described as second half Curry magic.
When I saw that it was a 38-27 game at halftime in favor of the Hoyas, I was certain that Davidson would win. If you happened to miss the first round game between Davidson and Gonzaga it would have been easy to assume a Hoya win.
For those that watched the special first round game, however, they saw Mr. Stephen Curry score 40 total points. The funny thing about this number is that 30 of them were scored in the second half.
A second half miracle against Georgetown was a repeat of Friday as Curry scored 30 total points, 25 of them coming after halftime.
The problem I have with the furious comebacks is that it is very dangerous to get yourself in such a deep hole. If Davidson is going to beat a good Wisconsin team, they really need to get Curry going in both halves.
If other players like Jason Richards can keep scoring, however, Davidson has a superb chance of making an unexpected Elite Eight appearance. Richards had 20 points, most ing the first half, and will be a key in next Friday's game against the Badgers of Wisconsin.
Georgetown's demise began five minutes into the second half. Although Curry missed 10 of his first 12 shots, he was the best player on the court for the last 15 minutes when he brought Davidson back from a 17 point deficit.
20 Hoya turnovers did not help matters and when Roy Hibbert picked up his fourth foul, Davidson had their chance. With the 7'2" senior on the bench, their defense was vulnerable for the crushing blow from Curry.
Late in the game when Davidson had raced to a 67-60 lead, Georgetown attempted to rally with a couple of 3-pointers, but the comeback was derailed by Curry's free-throw shooting ability.
This was a great game featuring a high-scoring team overcoming a defensive power-house. I would not be surprised to see Davidson continue their 24 game win streak into the Elite Eight with a win against Wisconsin
The key to beating Wisconsin will be getting balanced scoring from Curry and the other starters in both halves.
