Does anyone remember Sean Dawkins?
I do. I was looking through my football cards and I saw a name published as, "Sean Dawkins." It showed some real tall guy catching a football and was on the Saints. Now this is what I was wondering: "Who in the hell is Sean Dawkins?"
Well I got my answer, finally. This is who he is:
Coming out of Redbank, New Jersey was the first thing. Being born on February 3, 1971 was better. Sean Dawkins started his football career at Cupertino's Homestead High School as a wide receiver.
After playing like a standout player, he earned a valuable scholarship to Cal Berkley, or just the California Golden Bears.
Sean Dawkins proved himself as a threat with his 6'4", 215-pound frame. With his dominant size, he produced scary speed. In 1990, Dawkins and the Golden Bears won the Copper Bowl against Wyhoming, winning their first bowl game since 1938!
Dawkins and Bears proved themselves once more as they beat top ranked Clemson in the Citrus Bowl to earn the Bears the seventh spot in the polls. That was their highest since 1950.
Even though the Dawkins' Golden Bears were a laughing stock in 1992, Dawkins was brightened to become one of the best players in the NCAA that year, becoming an All-American. After that huge accomplishment, he skipped his senior year and declare himself towards the NFL Draft.
Going to the draft was the right thing. He was the 16th pick in the draft. He was also drafted by my most favorite NFL team in the world, the Indianapolis Colts. Dawkins was the man of the Colts in the receiver spot.
In his first year, he had 26 catches for 430 yards and one touchdown. He also had a very famous play as he had a 68 yarder! In his second year, 1994, he had 51 catches for 742 yards and five touchdowns. He added a 49 yard play that year and was the man.
1995 turned out better, he had 52 catches for 784 yards and three touchdowns. It also included a catch for 52 yards! That year also marked his best year with the team. The Colts made it to the AFC Championship but lost to the Steelers by a killer last second play. 20-16 was the sad score.
The year after the painful loss, Dawkins recovered and had 54 catches for 751 yards but only one touchdown. That also included a 42 yard play. 1997 was the end of the Colt-era for Sean Dawkins. This was his last year with the team.
Even though it was his last year with the team, this was his best year with the team, statistically. He had 68 catches for 804 yards and two touchdowns. He also added on a 51 yard pass. Those stats looked to bring a good farewell.
This was the year when my football card was made of Sean Dawkins, the one that made me write this article: 1998. In 1998, Dawkins was on the Saints but for only one dang year.
He had 53 catches for 823 yards and one touchdowns. He also added a 64 yard catch. 1999, when he was on the Seahawks, was the best year for him, statistically. He marked 58 catches for a stunning 992 yards and seven touchdowns, including a 45 yard play!
In his last year with the team, he brought out a good farewell with 63 catches for 731 yards and five pretty decent touchdowns. He also stunned the fans with his 40 yard play.
In his last year in the NFL, 2001, Dawkins reached a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He marked 20 catches for 234 yards and zero touchdowns. He also had a 28 yard catch. Dawkins left the NFL at a young age, 30 years old.
Dawkins was known as a pretty decent receiver. He had 445 career catches for 6,291 yards and 25 touchdowns. If he stayed in the NFL for a couple of more years, he would have been a potential Hall of Famer.
What happened that made him retire? Injuries? God knows. Sean Dawkins knows. Now, as of 2003, Dawkins has a new career: Real Estate.
Now he is 38, still young and doing his thing. But he actually didn't retire in 2001, however. He was signed by the Vikings in 2002 but he was cut by the team. So he actually retired at the age of 31.
Still young, though. To me, Dawkins will be remembered as a threat and a decent receiver. He was such a great player and puts on decent numbers and helps out the team with his size and scary ability.
Now do you remember Sean Dawkins?
Still in real estate, still one of the threats the NFL once had.
