Daniel Agger's goal near the end of the first half is enough for three points for Liverpool but they really should have added four or five more to their tally today.
Southampton stay in the drop zone after a rather meek display; they certainly improved after the break but didn't come close to netting an equaliser.
90+2'—Last few seconds. Looks like the Reds have done enough now, with just the one goal to show for their domination.
90+1'—And another chance. Sterling is in, clear, but neglects to shoot and instead tries to pass to Gerrard rushing up in support. The pass never reaches him and Southampton scramble the ball clear.
90'—ANOTHER BIG MISS. Sterling picks up a loose pass and can simply square to Suarez to seal the game but delays, when he's tackled the ball breaks to Suarez anyway but by now he's closed down and his shot goes wide. Liverpool should have buried this game.
Three minutes added on.
89'—Last minute of the 90. Still Liverpool looking to come forward and put this game to bed. Reina has been untested at the other end but the crowd area uneasy.
Liverpool sub: Jamie Carragher on for Lucas Leiva. The Brazilian gets a standing ovation for his performance on his first match back.
86'—Stats from EA Sports on GOLTV: 22 - 7 shots now, with 12-4 on target.
85'—Ramirez gets past Jose Enrique all too easily but his eventual cross is cut-out and Liverpool break. Johnson plays in the Liverpool left-back who shoots from range; Gazzaniga saves but Fonte has to be alert to clear with Suarez following in to tap home.
83'—Jamie Carragher is sent to warm up for Liverpool. Lambert has half a chance to shoot on the turn but Agger makes a good block at close range.
82'—It was indeed hand ball from Suarez, that's why he was booked. Doesn't look too happy with himself either.
80'—HOW IS IT NOT 2-0?! Johnson plays in Sterling who feeds Gerrard in the six yard box and his pull back reaches Suarez—who heads over the bar. Should have scored, and Suarez is booked. Was it hand ball? He'll miss the next game now.
78'—The away team trying to get themselves back into this match. They haven't come close to scoring yet but they've been much more involved in the game than in the first half.
76'—GOOD SAVE! Booming shot from Jose Enrique which is punched clear by Gazzaniga at his near post. From the rebound, Johnson tries to shape to shoot on his left foot but curls well wide of goal.
Southampton sub: Puncheon off, Jay Rodriguez on.
75'—Liverpool counter-attack at pace and Henderson has the chance to burst into the box, loses it, and when Sterling picks it up again and plays the through-ball, checks his run instead of getting into the area.
73'—Close to a defenders' double-act for Liverpool as Skrtel gets on the end of a corner to head all the way across goal, but his effort drops wide of the post.
72'—A little under 20 minutes remaining now and Liverpool will want to step up their attacking play again to try and seal the win. They don't want to be going into the final minutes of the game and getting nervous about letting it slip late on.
70'—Southampton sub: Cork off, Davis on.
Bit of a blooper from the stadium announcer there who called the away team "Swansea" by mistake.
67'—SHOULD BE 2-0. Suarez flicks Jose Enrique into the area and he has a clear run on goal but hesitates too long to shoot with his right foot, with only the keeper to beat from close range. It's deflected behind for a corner which Gerrard shoots over the bar from.
Liverpool sub: Jordan Henderson on for Joe Allen.
67'—Suarez into the area a third time to leave defenders bamboozled by his runs, and the home side want a penalty but they're not getting it.
66'—Jordan Henderson is being readied for the home side. How long before the Southampton manager Nigel Adkins makes his move?
65'—This is the best spell Southampton have had in the game as they build well to create a few opportunities to cross, but nothing comes of it. Gerrard breaks forward but with little in the way of support he is caught out on the ball by Schneiderlin.
63'—Suarez turns it on again inside the box to leave two defenders trailing in his wake, but Lallana makes a good sliding block to concede the corner.
62'—Lallana gets in behind the defence for the first time having come across to the right channel and has a chance to shoot, but his effort is easily blocked and Reina scoops up the loose ball.
61'—Lovely skill from Suarez as he leaves two defenders for dead. Fonte comes across to clear at the third time of asking.
