What Tarik Glenn's Retirement Does to the Colts
Widely regarded as one of the premier left tackles in football, Tarik Glenn told team officials he was burned out and wants to move on to other things. This is probably a more serious loss than all the other free agency hits last years champions have taken.
One of the main reasons Peyton Manning is as good he is, is due to an offensive line that excels at keeping him off his ass. You take away Glenn from that picture and you can be sure that Manning's decisions will have to be even quicker and that he'll see a lot more pressure in the pocket.
Besides losing a quarterback, losing a left tackle is probably the most dreaded fear of a coaching staff. Glenn's replacement for the moment is Charlie Johnson who has all of 1 NFL start to his credit.
Last year Peyton Manning was sacked only 15 times less than 1 per game and the best in the NFL. A good comparison in this scenario is the 2006 Kansas City Chiefs who after losing their left tackle Will Shields(good name for a blind side protector) proceeded to allow 41 sacks compared to the 32 allowed the year before.
So if Manning has less time to throw and more pressure on him the Colts offense can expect to sputter a bit more this year. I'd say the Colts are still good to win the AFC South but not good enough for a first round bye.
Without Glenn I'd say their somewhere between a 9-11 win team.
