The Brooklyn Nets took Round 1 of the Battle for New York with a thrilling 96-89 overtime win over the Knicks on Monday night.

After Brook Lopez tied the game in regulation with a free throw, Deron Williams missed on a potential game-winning three-pointer. But thanks to some stout defense in the extra period (New York scored just six points), the Nets were able to escape with a win in the first-ever meeting between these teams in Brooklyn.

The city rivals now both sit at 9-4.

Player of the Game: Brook Lopez

Deron Williams deserves credit here as he poured in 16 points to go along with 14 assists, six rebounds and three steals, but he shot just 6-of-17 from the field, so I'll give the big man the slight margin.

Not only did Lopez also achieve a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, but he was a force defending the basket, finishing with an impressive five blocks.

After an injury-plagued 2011-12 season, the seven-footer is quietly having a very good season, especially on the defensive end.

Up Next for New York

The Knicks will try to right the ship when they take their 4-4 road record to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks on Wednesday night.

Up Next for Brooklyn

The Nets start a three-game road trip when they travel to Boston to battle the Celtics on Wednesday.
