The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
I’ve been a little behind schedule recently.
Not to make excuses, but I've had a few personal situations over the last week and just haven’t had the drive to spit these things out.
Hopefully, now that everything is kind of behind me, I can start delivering the rest in rapid-fire mode.
After all, the real draft is just around the corner!
Pick No. 24: Tennessee Titans
I’ve made no bones about the fact that I think Vince Young is overrated.
He isn’t a great passer, he can be contained by NFL defenders, and he doesn’t throw or score touchdowns. His production numbers were so bad that it’s a miracle the Titans snuck into the playoffs last year.
That said, if you’re going to throw the guy out there and call him your franchise quarterback, you might as well get him someone to throw the ball to.
Really, it’s a credit to Jeff Fisher that he was able to get anything at all out of that offense in 2007.
The signing of Justin McCareins gives him a wide receiver who at least deserves to be in the NFL—which might be an improvement over anything the Titans had last season.
As for Alge Crumpler—now that was a fantastic addition. Crumpler gives Tennessee an immediate impact player on offense, which I’m not sure they could have gotten in the draft.
His addition also allows the Titans to look in another direction in the first round. I still expect them to add a wide receiver, but they no longer have to reach if one of the top-three guys isn’t there at the 24th pick.
Instead, they can focus on defense.
Albert Haynesworth is an absolute monster in the middle of the Titans' D-line, but when he’s out their entire defense falls apart. They need a guy who can step in and hold his own when Haynesworth isn’t in the game.
Having someone to play next to him and draw some of the double-teams away would be nice as well.
The Pick: Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina
If you believe the mock drafts all over the Internet, Kentwan will drop down somewhere into the middle of the second round.
I don’t buy it.
When you’re a defensive tackle with size, strength, and talent, you don’t usually drop into the middle of the second round. When you’re a team in need of a defensive tackle picking late in the first round, you jump at someone like Kentwan Balmer.
I know most people in Tennessee want a wide receiver, but if you look at the Titans' 2007 season, it was the games Haynesworth missed that cost them a higher seed in the playoffs.
Balmer will impact them immediately on the field. I’m not sure any of the WRs still available in this mock draft will offer any immediate rewards.
