Former boxing world champion Hector "Macho" Camacho has been shot in his native Puerto Rico and is in critical condition.

According to Jhonny Gonzalez of Boxingscene.com, Camacho was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Bayoman, Puerto Rico.

The driver of the car was killed while Camacho, in the passenger seat, suffered gunshot wounds to his face and neck. He has been rushed to San Pablo Hospital in the city where he is in critical condition.

The full extent of his injuries, and whether or not they are life-threatening, is not yet known.

It is also not yet known whether this was a random event or whether Camacho may have been targeted.

Camacho was known for his colorful personality and style in the ring. He would often have elaborate entrances and in-ring attire that bordered on the ridiculous.

His personality often overshadowed that he was a very good fighter who accomplished a great deal in the ring.

During his career he was a four-time world champion in the super-featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight classes.

He last fought in 2010, dropping a unanimous decision to journeyman Saul Duran.
