Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be on the road back to the ring, possibly as soon as July 11 of this year. That is the date of HBO's airing for their boxing event "World Championship Boxing." His opponent? The winner of the Hatton-Pacquiao bout scheduled for May 2.
According to a source, Mayweather Jr. has been working out in his Las Vegas gym and is in great shape. The source said the undefeated pound for pound king is "itching to go. The way he sounded, he is willing to take on whoever they throw in his face."
The major issue facing this comeback by Mayweather Jr. is the date. A deal for a fight between cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek and former two-division champion Bernard Hopkins is in negotiations for the same July 11 date. Who will win out?
"They don't want to upset Floyd and they hope the situation resolves itself," according to the source.
According to Mayweather Jr.'s father, the source may be dead on.
"Of course, there is no question about it," Mayweather Sr. said. "He's trying to get a fight right now, as we speak. He's gonna fight again."
Either way, I foresee a great fight or two in the pipeline for boxing. Mayweather-Hatton. Mayweather-Pacquiao. The rematches for each fight if any.
This year looks mighty promising for the sport in general!
