BCS Rankings: Overrated Teams Headed Towards Bowl Beatdowns

Richard Langford@@noontide34Correspondent INovember 19, 2012

Every year in college football there are teams that roll into big time bowl games and get blown out—leaving everyone to sit back and say, "You know what? Those guys weren't nearly as good as we thought."

That's just the nature of college football. It is just an inexact science to pinpoint the best teams. This year, there are three teams that are obviously overrated and cruising for a huge letdown.

No. 4 Florida

The Florida Gators have navigated the tough SEC with just one loss and they have done so while putting up the nation's third-best scoring defense.

However, upon closer inspection, is this Florida team really the fourth best in the nation?

They stifled LSU while beating them 14-6 in The Swamp and they destroyed South Carolina 44-11, but since that win over the Gamecocks, Florida has not looked anything like the fourth-best team in the nation.

The Gators lost the next week to Georgia then beat Missouri and Louisiana-Lafayette by just a touchdown in back-to-back weeks.

Florida's offense is weak and it is not getting any better as the season goes on.

While the Gators' defense has been outstanding, their lack of offense is going to doom them either next week against Florida State or in a high-profile bowl game.

No. 6 Kansas State

I am glad the Wildcats picked up a loss because they would have made for a terrible national championship game.

The Wildcats impressed by not losing, but take a look at their schedule. They don't have an overly impressive win on there. The best win was probably a 24-19 victory over Oklahoma, but Notre Dame handled the Sooners with much more ease.

Kansas State's offense has certainly spent moments of this season looking elite, but the defense hasn't, and the 52 Baylor just hung on them will support that.

This is a team that isn't exceptional at any one part of the game, and other elite teams will find something they can exploit on this squad.

No. 18 Rutgers

Rutgers plays in the Big East and the Big East is just awful. So just because Scarlet Knights are 9-1, it doesn't mean they are a Top-25 team.

Outside of the Big East, Rutgers has beaten Tulane, Howard, Arkansas and Navy. Sure, the Arkansas victory is eye catching, but the Razorbacks have had a tough year and when Rutgers beat them they were embroiled in a four-game losing streak where they looked like one of the worst teams in football.

They had one other non-conference game and they lost that one to Kent State by 12.

Rutgers has a solid defense, but it doesn't have the athletes to hang against elite playmakers and its offense is just plain terrible.
