Survivor Series: Every Triple Threat WWE Championship Match in the PPV's History
This Sunday, CM Punk looks to continue his reigning and defending WWE Championship streak by defeating competitors John Cena and Ryback. If he accomplishes this feat, he will be one day shy of a full year, with the completion being the next day on Raw.
Punk has a tough test ahead of him, seeing how this is a Triple Threat match.
The Triple Threat concept for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series is a rarity, as this will only be the fourth match of its kind out of the 26 events dating back to 1987.
Here are the other Triple Threat WWE Championship matches that happened at Survivor Series:
Rock vs. Triple H vs. Big Show—Survivor Series 1999
1999 marked the WWE debut of the Big Show, assisting Vince McMahon during his cage match against Stone Cold Steve Austin at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre pay-per-view.
After being an enforcer only for a short time, his allegiance with McMahon quickly severed. This caused him to form a group called the Union with fellow Corporation rejects Ken Shamrock, Mankind, and Test.
At the Survivor Series of that year, Big Show managed to be a wild card for the scheduled triple threat match between Rock, Steve Austin and Triple H after Austin was injured and hospitalized. Show seized the opportunity, winning the match and his first WWE Championship.
Triple H vs. Edge vs. Vladimir Kozlov—Survivor Series 2008
Yes, you read it right—Vladimir Kozlov was in a WWE Championship match at one of the "big four" pay-per-views. For a moment, Kozlov was on a monstrous push, even defeating the Undertaker on an episode of SmackDown.
At the time, Jeff Hardy was the main one vying for the WWE Championship, which was exclusive to SmackDown. Kozlov was a candidate to be chosen on the Cyber Sunday PPV, and he expressed his anger of not being the fans' pick on subsequent episodes of SmackDown, eventually earning his spot in the Triple Threat match.
Hardy was found beaten in a hotel, unable to compete in the booked Triple Threat match at Survivor Series. After minutes of brutal one-on-one competition between Triple H and Kozlov, a returning Edge managed to slither his way in the match due to his then-relationship with Vickie Guerrero, winning his fourth and final WWE Championship.
John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H—Survivor Series 2009
After a multi-year hiatus, Shawn Michaels and Triple H reformed D-Generation X, mainly feuding with the McMahons, the Spirit Squad and Rated-RKO. After an injury at the New Year's Revolution PPV in January 2007, Triple H was on a long absence, and he and Michaels only teamed sporadically after his return.
In 2009, Shawn Michaels took a hiatus after losing against the Undertaker at WrestleMania XXV, causing Triple H to seek after him to reunite DX. After his mission was successful, DX rose again in popularity and was placed in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship against John Cena, after defeating Legacy members Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase the previous month at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.
Even with the level of popularity that DX merited upon their reunion, Cena still managed to get past the duo and retain the title at Survivor Series in a hard-fought victory that was admittedly an enjoyable match.
Does this year's Triple Threat match have the potential to be better and any or both of the previous ones? Comment civilly below.
