Predicting The NFL's Top 10 Breakout Players in 2009

Every year there are breakout players; players who have been counted out, labeled busts or over the hill, or were not even discussed six months before. They can find there way onto the field in a variety of ways, whether it be from injury, lack of production from the original starter, or proving they have what it takes in training camp.
Regardless of how they become stars, they are always exciting and surprise nearly everyone. These are the breakout players I predict to make an impact this coming season.
10. Matt Roth, Miami Dolphins
Last year, he didn't have the stats to back up how disruptive he actually was. As a big DE turned OLB, he is a tremendous pass rusher built in the mold of players like Demarcus Ware and Shaun Merriman. Don't be surprised if he has double-digit sacks and approaches 100 tackles.
9. Byron Leftwitch
Already labeled a bust by many, but showed flashes of greatness playing for Big Ben, whether it was in a blowout or because of injury. He hasn't re-signed with the Steelers, and I believe he will succeed if given the chance to start. I like him possibly going to Detroit, as he has the big arm to get Calvin Johnson the ball.
8. Troy Smith, New York Jets
Some have said he doesn't have the ability to be an NFL quarterback and that he is too small, but I bet they said Sproles was too small as well. Smith is a former Heisman winner with speed who moves like a running back. The Jets' head coach obviously thinks highly of him, as he brought him with him from Baltimore. Not to mention, there aren't really any other QBs on the roster, and it isn't likely a QB will fall that far in the draft.
7. Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Cheifs
Yes, I know you're saying he already puts up big numbers, but they could be much better. Let's see what this talented receiver can do with a real quarterback throwing him the ball...could be reminiscent of Cassel to Moss last year.
6. Vernon Gholston, New York Jets
After showing great promise in last year's draft, he failed to put up the numbers worthy of a first-round pick and was prematurely labeled a bust. But physically he is just a beast who runs fast and hits hard. Now, with one of the best defensive minds coaching him in Rex Ryan, let's see what he can really do before we all call him a bust.
5. Tyrell Johnson, Mineosota Vikings
A young athletic safety from Arkansas known for his brutal hits, Minnesota letting veteran SS Darren Sharper go shows they have confidence in this playmaker. Johnson stepped in for Sharper during injury and showed a lot of promise. Expect him frequently on SportsCenter highlights making life a living nightmare for the receivers in the NFC North.
4. Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers
He is the fastest and best receiver on the team and he doesn't even play the position. He is also arguably the best athlete on the team as a freak at tight end. Expect him to lead the team in receptions and receiving yards, because as of now, they don't have anyone else to pass to.
3. Trent Edwards, Buffalo Bills
With Lee Evans and Terrell Owens as receivers, putting up numbers now will be so easy that even a Buffalo Bill can do it. If I'm wrong, then at least we get more T.O. drama. But I don't think I am wrong. Edwards and his receivers could be dangerous.
2. Felix Jones, Dallas Cowboys
In his rookie season, this speedy halfback showed a lot of promise early until his season was lost to injury. He has the speed to turn the corner and has a chance to take it to the house anytime he touches the ball. He is also a very dangerous return man.
With the release of T.O., the Cowboys should look to rely on the running game more. He may not be the top guy, but a player who can run, catch and return kicks could be the most explosive on the team this year.
1. Michael Bush
This bruiser out of Louisville is the real deal. He has decent speed amazing power, and vision. He would have competed for the Heisman his senior year had it not been cut short by a broken leg. Now, he is on the Raiders with a chip on his shoulders and a lot to prove.
We were able to see a glimpse of his full potential late last season, especially in Week 17, where he rushed for over 180 yards against the almost-playoff-bound Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Expect Bush to start next season ahead of McFadden, as Bush is much better suited as an every-down back.
