Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay can never seem to escape trade rumors, and there are several teams that would be able to compete for a championship with him in the lineup.
Gay’s name surfaced a lot this summer, and sources say he would be open to a trade. The general consensus around the league is that Memphis would be willing to move Gay if the right offer comes along.
This will cause several teams to seriously consider making a deal at some point before the trade deadline, as Gay would put these franchises on the track towards fighting for a championship.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers have been on fire to start the season, but they do not currently have the roster to win a championship.
As much as their L.A. neighbors have struggled, the Lakers still have better pieces and a significantly stronger core. However, that would change if the Clippers were able to package players and picks to acquire Gay.
With a core of Gay, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, the team would not only become a contender this season, but have young stars to build around for years to come.
The Clippers have already added several talented role players in the offseason, and with the addition of another talented scorer this would become a deep team with one of the best trios in the NBA. No team in basketball would benefit more from acquiring Gay.
While Danilo Gallinari has been productive for the Nuggets at the small forward position, he is not the same caliber of player as Gay.
Gallinari can certainly score, but Gay has been significantly more productive offensively throughout his career and is also an elite athlete. This would be a major upgrade at the three spot.
With Ty Lawson pushing the tempo and having Gay and Andre Iguodala to pass to, the Nuggets would be unstoppable in transition.
Gay is also a much better defender than Gallinari, and with the current Grizzlies star joining Iguodala and JaVale McGee, Denver would also be able to stop teams consistently. The Nuggets would be a dangerous team if they were able to acquire Gay.
The Timberwolves have been ravaged by injuries, but if they are able to get everyone healthy and acquire Gay, they could shake up the balance of power in the Western Conference.
With Gay, Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio as the team’s building blocks, Minnesota would be one of the most offensively-potent teams in the NBA.
Love is one of the most complete offensive players in basketball. Both he and Rubio are fantastic passers, and this would allow Gay to be more dangerous and effective offensively than he is in Memphis.
Given Minnesota’s injuries, they may be forced to make a bold midseason move in order to make a push towards the playoffs. Acquiring Gay would do that and much more for this team.
