In Washington D.C. today, President Barack Obama announced his nomination of the Dan Rooney II to become the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland.
During the ceremony President Obama said, "I am honored and grateful that such a dedicated and accomplished individual has agreed to serve as the representative of the United States to the Irish people. Dan Rooney is an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture, and education, and I have every confidence that he and Secretary Clinton will ensure America’s continued close and unique partnership with Ireland in the years ahead."
Rooney is the recipient of the American Ireland Fund's Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in to help restore and help in the Irish peace process. He has also been named honorary Commander of the British Empire for his continued work in the Irish peace process.
In 1976, Rooney helped to found the American Ireland Fund. This fund has raised more than $300 million for programs in Ireland that support and create peace and educational programs in the country.
In 1993, the "Rooney Fellowship" was created to honor his generosity and works on behalf of Ireland.
In the NFL, Rooney has won a multitude of awards, most recently his Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl 43, more importantly, in 2000 Rooney was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Dan Rooney's most notable contribution to the sports world is the "Rooney Rule," in which sports teams must interview minority candidates for staff positions.
Dan Rooney should be a great Ambassador to Ireland, a land he has fought so ardently for.
