WHY JAY CUTLER MUST STAY
Forget personality and forget professional politics…I am going to try one more time to convince people once and for all how good Jay Cutler is and why Denver MUST keep him.
My point in all the comments I have written and in an article I wrote earlier in the week, is that when you have a player of Cutler’s caliber at the quarterback position, you need to realize how rare that is.
The guy’s raw skills are absolutely stunning—the best in the league, comfortably. Forget the fact that his passes could split the atom. He also has beautiful mechanics, good pocket presence, a quick release, the ability to slide left and right and throw accurately on the run, genuine mobility, size, physicality and all round accuracy.
If you don’t agree with me, maybe you will defer to a cross panel of NFL scouts and coaches who had this to say about Cutler, even BEFORE his breakout year last year.
That article tells you so much…because it deals in potential, not the here and now.
We have heard that Josh McDaniels has an offensive system in mind which calls for a more conservative quarterback, or rather, does not need someone with Cutler’s myriad skills to be effective.
We have heard the Broncos quarterback does have something of an attitude problem.
And, OK, not many players must transcend any preconceived notions of an offensive philosophy.
And not many players should be indulged if their attitude is questionable.
But if there is an exception that proves the rule, Jay Cutler is it.
Moreover, he maybe surly and arrogant, but he is no lazy hot dog eating Jeff George incarnate. The guys attitude to his actual work is impeccable. He is incredibly competitive and always well prepared.
I like McDaniels but I am completely bewildered by his attitude towards Cutler. I cannot believe things have been allowed to deteriorate like this. For a guy who has a sharp football mind and must have reasonable general acumen as well, how can he not realize that losing Cutler would be the worse thing for the franchise and for him personally?
If McDaniels loses Cutler, starts Chris Simms (Chris Simms!) at quarterback next year and Denver misses the playoffs again, the coach will be crucified.
Even the usually jovial and light hearted Rick Reilly (a truly great sportswriter) had this to say about the soap opera…

If it has all gone too far, and there is no way to mend the fences with Cutler, for gods sake please at least allow the Broncos to realize what kind of a jewel they’ve got, and hold out for a trade worthy of the guy.
The idea of trading Cutler for Kyle Orton or Brady Quinn, and any amount of mediocre picks that would come with these two bums, makes me feel physically ill.
To be honest I cannot see a conceivable trade package out there worthy of Cutler, I really can't. Nothing I have heard proposed so far even comes close.
If Denver can't get what they want for him in a trade they should just keep Cutler under contract and play him next year. I would take a P*ssed off Cutler any day of the week over any other quarterback in the NFL bar Manning and a healthy Carson Palmer.
If Denver starts winning (which they will if he stays) all will be forgotten very quickly.
Please Mcdaniels, Bowlen, for everyone that is a Broncos fan, don't lose this future Hall of Famer just as he is about to enter the prime of his career.
Do what ever needs to be done to mend the fences.
