We here at Set Piece are suckers for a good volley. Ayanda Patosi's goal for Belgian club Sporting Lokeren this weekend certainly qualifies.
Allow us to reconstruct the setting.
It was a Belgian Pro League match on Friday and Lokeren led Standard Liege 1-0 in the second half. The hosts attacked down the middle of the pitch, and the play moved out to the right flank as a couple of Lokeren players knocked the ball around in the air without letting it touch the ground.
With the ball still in the air after four touches, Patosi positioned himself expertly under the ball and unleashed a stunning first-time volley into the side netting at the far post.
Lokeren went on to win the match 2-1, their fifth straight league triumph. With the victory, Peter Maes' team moved up to third place.
Patosi's volley can be seen in the video above. It's our Set Piece Goal of the Weekend, for obvious reasons. Enjoy.
In case the video prompted you to wonder, Patosi is a 20-year-old South African midfielder. According to his profile at Soccerway, his birthday is on Halloween. So that's fun.
Patosi's volley beat out a strong crop of challengers this week. Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez curled in a free kick that just oozed class, as did Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus (who earned bonus points for banking the ball in off the post).
