Jarius Wright: What Breakout Performance Means for Vikings and Fantasy Owners

Ryan DavenportNov 11, 2012

Jarius Wright has finally arrived.

After weeks of waiting for the former Arkansas star to get an opportunity, the injury to Percy Harvin created an opening for Wright to demonstrate his potential.

And the Minnesota Vikings' fourth-rounder from 2012 has done just that.

As Kevin Seifert of ESPN quickly reported, Wright made quite an impression during his NFL debut at home in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions:

"

Wright, active for the first time because of Percy Harvin's ankle injury, caught the first two NFL passes thrown to him during the Vikings' opening possession here at the Metrodome. The first was a 59-yard play (the Vikings' longest pass play of the season) after he got behind Detroit Lions safety Erik Coleman, and the second was a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christian Ponder

"

Now that Wright has finally gotten the call to prove himself, the rookie wide receiver will only get more opportunities—especially if Harvin is unable to go in the Vikings' tilt with the Bears in Week 12.

For the Vikings, who boast the league's third-worst passing offense, Wright's emergence couldn't have come at a better time, as the team attempts to shake off back-to-back losses and get back into the postseason hunt.

Though it's a very small sample size, Wright's breakout performance is an encouraging sign for Minnesota. Outside of Harvin, the Vikings don't have a single receiver with more than 300 yards on the season.

From a fantasy perspective, Wright will be a hot waiver-wire commodity following Week 10. Putting up big numbers against the Lions, who boast a top-10 pass defense, will attract owners in leagues across the country.

Yeah, a lot of whether or not Wright's NFL debut is a sign of things to come depends on if Christian Ponder can get into a rhythm down the stretch. But the second-year quarterback will certainly have an easier time doing so with quality receivers to throw to.

Time will tell if Wright's big first half against the Lions was an aberration. But for now, he has to be considered a hot fantasy commodity.
