LSU Football: Zach Mettenberger Proves Breakout Game Against Tide Was No Fluke

It appears the LSU Tigers finally have a quarterback.
Zach Mettenberger followed up an impressive 298-yard and one-touchdown effort against Alabama with another solid 273-yard and two-touchdown game in the win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Tigers fans must be yelling, "About time!"
After all, poor quarterback play cost LSU dearly in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. I'm sure Tigers fans still have nightmares about former QB Jordan Jefferson's disastrous shovel pass right to Alabama's C.J. Mosley.
Mettenberger, a junior from Watkinsville, Georgia seems to have finally gotten the hang of running the LSU offense. In the three games leading up to the matchup with Alabama, Mettenberger had only a total of 403 yards and just one touchdown with two interceptions.
Of course, those three teams were defensive powerhouses Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M.
However, Alabama and Mississippi State aren't slouches on defense either.
Also, Mettenberger has shown flashes of potential earlier in the season. He had good games against bad teams like North Texas, Idaho and Towson. However, a bad Auburn squad also held him to only 169 yards passing and no touchdowns.

However, these past two games really represent Mettenberger's first two solid performances against solid SEC competition.
Now, LSU finishes the season with very winnable games against Ole Miss and Arkansas. Despite the Crimson Tide's loss to Texas A&M, the only way LSU can win the SEC West is if Alabama does the unthinkable and loses to a horrible Auburn squad.
Still, LSU will find itself in a decent bowl game like the Capital One Bowl or the Cotton Bowl. That will give Mettenberger and the Tiger offense more games to develop and prepare for next year.
Mettenberger will then be a senior, and LSU would have the momentum to make another national championship run.
And this time, they'll have a quarterback who won't just give the game away.
