A History of the FA Cup Final: 137 Years Young Today

It is the oldest cup competition on earth. It is the greatest cup competition on earth. And today, the FA Cup, more particularly the FA Cup final, celebrates it's 137th birthday.

During it's lifetime, football has changed almost beyond recognition, but still it is the premier cup competition in world football.

In 1871, one C.W. Alcock suggested a cup competition in connection with the association. Just four months later, the very first FA Cup match was played. Clapham Rovers beat Upton Park 3-0, with Jarvis Kennick scoring the first ever FA Cup goal.

It was on Mar. 16, 1872 that the first ever final was played, and the first ever winner was crowned. In this slide show I will be looking back at previous FA Cup finals, highlighting in particular notable finals that have gone down in history.
