Brady Quinn’s job as the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs lasted less than a quarter before he was knocked out of the game with a concussion and Matt Cassel returned. Quinn missed last week’s game against the San Diego Chargers and is likely to miss Monday’s game as well.
According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, Cassel will start on Monday night, and Quinn has been advised not to play to team doctors. Per the report, Romeo Crennel said the team is protecting Quinn and that Ricky Stanzi hasn’t been considered for the starting job.
Cassel has turned the ball over 18 times in seven games in 2012 and will face the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL on Monday. If there is good news, it’s that the Steelers haven’t exactly been great at grabbing turnovers and have just four fumble recoveries and four interceptions on the season. Pittsburgh’s pass rush is also below-average with just 14 sacks on the season, which is the same amount the Chiefs have through eight games.
After the release of Routt, maybe the Chiefs have defensive issues to worry about against Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown. Javier Arenas is the next man up at cornerback with Stanford Routt gone, according to Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star.
Arenas actually slides outside from his normal duties as the team’s nickel cornerback. With the nickel package becoming the base defense in today’s NFL, that means that Travis Daniels might actually be the player seeing more playing time with Routt out of town.
It’s certainly not the type of game where you want to break in a couple reserve corners or have a turnover machine under center, but that’s why the NFL is interesting, because any given Sunday, something unexpected can happen.
