The BCS title game is taking shape as the final weeks of the college football season slide into history, with four teams having the opportunity to finish undefeated in the title race. Alabama is leading the pack from No. 1, and Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame are all pushing for the No. 2 spot.
With the SEC pushing for a seventh straight national title, Alabama has a heavy weight on its back. If the fans of the SEC want the streak to continue, they should be rooting for an Alabama vs. Notre Dame national title game.
A number of factors would make this matchup special for the SEC and Notre Dame. It would match two of the most storied programs in college football history against one another and would rekindle a historic showdown that is owned by the Irish—Notre Dame is 5-1 all-time against Alabama.
It would also give the Crimson Tide the best chance at a win, leading Alabama to its second national title in as many years.
Notre Dame finds itself looking in from the outside currently sitting at No. 4 in the BCS, but a season-ending showdown against USC could give the Irish a much-needed boost.
Alabama is playing the best defense in the country, but Notre Dame isn’t far behind. If this matchup were to happen, it would pit two of the best defenses in the country against one another. The offensive output would be limited, to say the least.
SEC fans love defensive football, and this would give them all they could handle.
The Crimson Tide look unbeatable at this point after a come-from-behind win over LSU, but Oregon and Kansas State provide challenges that Alabama hasn’t seen this season, making a matchup with Notre Dame much more favorable.
Oregon has arguably the fastest skill position players in the country, and the read-option has caused the Crimson Tide issues in the past. Kansas State brings the same type of dynamic to the offensive side of the game, but their defense is stronger than the Ducks.
The Wildcats don’t have the speed that Oregon does on the outside, but they have enough playmakers to cause hiccups and blown assignments for the Alabama defense.
Kansas State also has a strong defense which would cause issues with the Crimson Tide offense.
Pac-12 fans are salivating at the thought that Oregon could bring its dangerous offense to the national title game against Alabama. It would be a flashy showdown that could result in a shootout that the Tide couldn’t handle, leading to a Ducks title run.
Fans of the SEC also recognize the strength and explosiveness of the Oregon offense and are hoping to see the golden domes and not “Stormtroopers” in Miami.
The easiest road for Alabama to push the SEC to an unprecedented seventh straight national title runs through Notre Dame. Expect the SEC faithful to root hard for this game until the final bowl lineups are announced.
