AUSTIN — Pick a Mack Brown career highlight. Any one of his eight- or nine-most important victories at Texas will suffice. Now remember how close it was to ending in irrevocable, soul-crushing disappointment. Brown won a national title, as well as two other Bowl Championship Series games. He prevailed on his first trips with UT to Nebraska and Ohio State and later beat the Cornhuskers for a Big 12 championship. He got the first word against Texas A&M in 1998 and the last one in 2011. And in every one of those games, the Longhorns trailed in the fourth quarter.
