Thanks again—and see you soon!
It's a very harsh scoreline in the end on Zaragoza who came out after the break with far more intent and vigour, and had a perfectly good goal disallowed for a wrongly-shown offside at 2-0.
Two late goals from Essien and Modric have put plenty of false shine on this Madrid performance, which was comfortable in the extreme in the first half and lax, lethargic and generally poor in the second.
It is, however, a big win—and that will lift Real Madrid up to third in La Liga table.
Full time at the Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid 4 Real Zaragoza 0
Scorers: Higuain, Di Maria, Essien, Modric.
And as in the first half, Real score two quick-fire goals to sink their opponents. Modric crosses to Ronaldo, who's shot on the stretch is well saved by Roberto. The ball breaks out to the edge of the area and Modric fires in a low shot on his left foot which takes a slight deflection off Callejon, sat on the floor, and finds the bottom corner of the net.
Real Madrid 4 Real Zaragoza 0
Luka Modric, 90+1 mins
Madrid break at pace and with too few Zaragoza defenders back covering, Benzema is able to cut infield, draw two defenders towards him and chip a pass in for Essien to run onto and place his shot past Roberto. A victory by three, then, which Madrid arguably do not quite deserve after their second-half performance.
Real Madrid 3 Real Zaragoza 0
Michael Essien, 88 mins
Real Zaragoza final change: Jose Mari replaced by Romaric.
86'—Two more chances for Real Madrid to wrap this win up. Modric curls a shot which is blocked inside the box, and then Ronaldo's low drive is saved by the feet of Roberto.
83'—WHAT A HIT!!!! Ronaldo spanks it in his inimitable style and the ball rockets past Roberto—and back off the crossbar. That ball was travelling at some speed. Still 2-0.
83'—Free kick for Real Madrid, dead centre and about 35 yards from goal. Everyone knows what's coming...
Real Madrid sub: Mourinho's final change is to send on Nacho in place of Alvaro Arbeloa.
80'—GREAT RUN!! Brilliant dribble and turn of pace from Javi Alamo who leaves three defenders for dead, but when it comes time to shoot he loses his composure and timing, and blazes wildly over the crossbar from inside the box.
79'—Callejon breaks down the right side and crosses low towards Ronaldo; the ball is cut-out halfway to its destination but the Portuguese attacker is offside anyway.
77'—Ronaldo loses the ball in his own half and Jose Mari passes into the area, but the fired-across ball from Alamo doesn't find a team mate.
Zaragoza sub: Postiga off, Carlos Aranda on.
74'—Sapunaru is shown a yellow card for tugging back and tripping Ronaldo. The game entering a very scrappy phase, frequently broken up with these subs and free kicks. 15 minutes or so to go.
And now a Real Zaragoza change: Javi Alamo on for Victor Rodriguez.
Real Madrid sub: Jose Callejon on for Angel Di Maria.
Both goalscorers have now been replaced.
71'—Jose Mourinho not looking at all impressed with his side's second half performance. He's about to make a second change.
68'—ZARAGOZA HAVE THE BALL IN THE NET...BUT RULED OUT FOR OFFSIDE. Postiga is flagged as he runs onto the through-ball and fires past Casillas to score—but he is level with play, and should not see his goal disallowed. Controversial.
Real Madrid sub: Gonzalo Higuain off, Karim Benzema on.
67'—Zaragoza try a short-worked free kick, but the shot by Rodriguez is into the ground and half-cleared. Madrid scramble it behind for a corner.
65'—Yellow card for Sergio Ramos as he takes out Montañes who goes waltzing past him. And then complains about it.
64'—HIT THE CROSSBAR!! Jose Mari lines up a shot from 25 yards and simply lets fly, with the ball screaming over Casillas and crashing back off his crossbar. That's the closest Zaragoza have come to a goal, by some distance. Real Madrid haven't done anything of note in the Zaragoza half for the past 10 minutes.
60'—An hour played, and Casillas is asked to do a bit more work. Zaragoza trying to work their way into the match a little more, but they need a goal as soon as possible if they are going to have a chance of taking at least a point from this match.
