That's it for the live commentary tonight, thanks very much for joining me—I'll be back at the weekend with more live action from Spain's top flight.
Just quickly time to tell you that in tonight's other League Cup matches, Norwich City have beaten Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 and Chelsea are currently beating Manchester United 4-3, with that match in extra time at present.
Judging by the teams who have exited the competition this week, it's a real missed opportunity for Liverpool to chase further silverware.
Swansea march on though—congratulations to them.
Until next time!
Michael Laudrup and Swansea progress and perhaps deservedly so; they certainly weren't two goals better than Liverpool but they were far more clinical, made better chances on the night and did a very good tactical job on the home team.
For Brendan Rodgers, its an unhappy first meeting with his former team and he will have plenty of reason to be disappointed with his side tonight.
The Reds didn't get started for far too long in the game—for some of those who came into the team this evening, perhaps they haven't exactly furthered their cause for more game time in the Premier League.
Full time at Anfield
Liverpool 1 Swansea City 3
Game over now. Liverpool are hit on the break with minimal personnel back, Michu rolls the ball across the six yard box and neither Jones nor Carragher can keep it out, with De Guzman tapping in from no distance at all. Swansea are going to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history; Liverpool are going out.
Liverpool 1 Swansea City 3
Jonathan De Guzman, 94 mins
90+3'—Allen's cross finds Suarez, but it's not even a half chance and the forward can only direct the ball at Tremmel. That's surely it now. A real missed opportunity for Liverpool.
90+3'—Last chance, Liverpool need the ball in the box. Gerrard shoots from range, it's blocked and runs all the way back to Coates.
90+2'—That was the chance. Gerrard works an opening for Shelvey who checks back onto his right foot—and Luis Suarez steals it off his toe, shooting first time and dragging the effort wide.
90+1'—Time running out for Liverpool. Downing crosses over from the right but it's easily cleared. Sterling tries his luck with a pass to Suarez, but the striker is crowded out.
Three minutes to be added on.
88'—Gerrard attempts a lofted through-ball for Shelvey to run onto, but it's too long and Tremmel charges a few paces out to claim the ball in the air. It's not looking great for the Reds, and Swansea continue to break with numbers when they win back the ball. Carragher almost sells Jones short with a backpass, but the Aussie keeper clears.
87'—A long spell of possession now for Swansea, just outside the Liverpool box. Michu, Routledge and Britton combine well but make nothing of it, other than run down the Reds' time.
86'—GREAT PLAY FROM SUAREZ! The Uruguayan somehow gets away from two defenders next to the byline and shoots left footed, but his effort is beaten away by Tremmel. After Liverpool keep the move alive, Sterling shoots well wide from the edge of the area.
85'—Swansea leading by a goal, with five minutes left at Anfield. Have Liverpool got another big chance left in them? They continue to press forward at every opportunity but need to keep their heads in the final third.
82'—Sterling and Suarez combine brilliantly inside the box, but the cross is headed away by Williams. Liverpool encamped inside the Swansea half now, but the away side defending in numbers.
79'—Ashley Williams is shown a yellow card for a hugely cynical foul on Suarez, dragging the forward to the ground after he was spun away from. Liverpool really with their tails up now, and Steven Gerrard the driving force through the middle. Downing strikes from 30 yards and it's easy for Tremmel—but it slips from his grasp and almost trickles over the line before the keeper recovers.
And just like that, they have a goal back! Sterling wins a free kick down the left side, which Gerrard swings over brilliantly into the box. Suarez is unmarked and glances his header past Tremmel, reducing the deficit by half. 14 minutes to go.
Liverpool 1 Swansea City 2
Luis Suarez, 76 mins
75'—Liverpool have 15 minutes to come up with something very big, or else the holders of the League Cup are exiting at the fourth round stage.
Swansea City sub: Pablo Hernandez off, replaced by Wayne Routledge.
Incredible. Liverpool somehow fail to put the ball in the net from the free kick with Coates, Carragher and Shelvey all close to adding the final touch—and then Swansea break light lightning, Pablo running into the area from the left flank and then crossing for Dyer to easily tap home from five yards out. Is that game over?
Liverpool 0 Swansea City 2
Nathan Dyer, 72 mins
71'—Liverpool have a free kick in a good area, about 25 yards from goal and out level with the right corner of the area. Suarez turned Williams and was tripped by the defender.
69'—Williams gets up to meet the corner this time—but diverts it wide of the target. Swansea have upped their game in the past five minutes, since that great chance for Downing.
68'—Another chance for Michu, and Brad Jones makes a really good fingertip stop to tip it over the bar. Another fine threaded pass from Pablo to set up his compatriot.
