The demise of the New York point guard is evident. There seems to be nothing on the rise for the exception of Lance Stephenson.
So, I thought I would boost my spirits with a look back at history when the New York point guard tore up the league.
Not in numerical order, just a list of the most prolific NY guards to run up-and-down the NBA courts.
If I'm missing anyone, let me know!
Rod Strickland
Bronx, New York
Before the Bronx native made it to the NBA, he was known for ruling the New York City courts (Ruckers among others)
His NBA career was somewhat impressive with a point average of 13.2 points and 7.3 assists per game.
NBA experts guarantee if Rod would have managed to stick to one or two teams (attitude problems), his stats would of been much more impressive.
Bob Cousy
New York, New York
The most rewarded guard to come out of New York. Cousy fascinated crowds with his streetball moves on NBA’s best while averaging 18,4 points and 7,5 assists per game. Oh, just so you know he also managed to do this:
Hall of Famer (1971), NBA champion (1957, '59, '60, '61, '62, '63); NBA MVP (1957); 10-time All-NBA First Team (1952-61); All-NBA Second Team ('62, '63); 13-time All-Star; All-Star MVP (1954, '57); One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.
Mark Jackson
Brooklyn, New York
Mark Jackson was a pass-first point guard, impacting all the teams he played on. The Brooklyn native in his 17-year career managed to snatch up the 1987 NBA Rookie of the Year award, become an NBA All-Star in 1989 and led his Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Jackson is also second on the all-time assist list with 10,323–behind John Stockton.
Kenny Smith
Rochester, New York
Playing a huge role in the two championships won during the Olajuwon years, Smith now is an NBA analyst alongside Charles Barkley.
During his career Kenny managed to rack up 9,397 points, 4,073 assists, and 1,454 rebounds.
Nate Archibald
Bronx, New York
Straight from the Bronx, Archibald revolutionized the point, dominated the point, fascinated everyone while commanding the point.
The only person ever to lead the league in points and assists with 34.0 ppg, 11.4 apg in 1972-73.
Nate was elected into the Hall of Fame after 14 outstanding years.
Lenny Wilkens
Brooklyn, New York
Hall of Fame player and coach Wilkens is indeed one of the renowned New York point guards of all-time.
Hall of Fame as player (1989) and coach (1998); Nine-time NBA All-Star (1963-65, 1967-71, '73); NBA All-Star Game MVP (1971); One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).
Kenny Anderson
Queens, New York
Before being drafted by the New Jersey Nets, the Queens native was considered one of the best basketball prospects of the country. Yet another streetball king in the New York city courts.
In 14 years, Kenny made the All-Star team once (93-94) and averaged 12.6 points with an assist total of 6.1.
Stephon Marbury
Coney Island, New York
A controversial career, indeed. However the numbers Starbury has posted throughout his career allows him to sit comfortably within the best New York point guards of all time.
Career point average of 19,6 and 7,7 assists.
Marbury is now playing backup point in a Boston Celtics jersey. Good riddance.
Lance Stephenson
Brooklyn, New York
A 6-foot-5, 200- plus pound High School shooting guard from Brooklyn, New York. Defending the colors of Lincoln High, Stephenson made a name for himself in the eighth grade when he challenged OJ Mayo in a High School game–OJ tore him up!
Could Lance Stephenson make this list and end the New York point guard drought?
