When the Gophers take the field prior to a home game they traditionally have players lead the team out onto the field while carrying an American flag and a flag representing the University of Minnesota. This Saturday, Minnesota will shift from protocol, as 1st Lt. Trey Van Wyhe of the United States Army (story here), will lead the team out onto the field carrying the American flag that he sent to coach Jerry Kill as a gift earlier this year. The flag has flown in Afghanistan where Van Wyhe, who is a lifelong Gopher fan from Hills., Minn., was recently deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
