With the departure of quarterback Matthew Stafford, who many analysts project as the top overall pick in the upcoming 2009 NFL Draft, senior quarterback Joe Cox is excited about taking over the reigns for the Georgia Bulldogs.
After watching Stafford grow and improve over the past three years, Cox has faithfully supported and backed the Georgia football team.
Now, just days away from the beginning of Georgia's spring football practice, Cox will finally see the fruits of his labor over the past few years.
Despite talk that Georgia's quarterback position is an open battle heading into the spring, fueled by ESPN's decision to carry the Georgia spring game live, Cox is firmly in command.
Head coach Mark Richt recently stated that there was an air of confidence surrounding the team with Cox taking over at quarterback.
Cox led Georgia to a come-from-behind victory against Colorado in 2006 when Stafford was struggling, before quietly resuming his role as a supporting player on the sidelines.
Now, he is ready to the vocal leader for the Georgia offense.
“I like being vocal,” Cox said. “I like being loud. That’s just how I play and hopefully if I can transfer that to just a couple other people on the team it could spread like wildfire."
Cox certainly deserves the respect of his teammates, and now he will finally get his shot to be the big man on campus after being the ultimate team player for the past three years.
